The SKS rifle is a simple gas operated auto loader with some very strong attributes in it’s favor. For all it’s glory and simplicity few rifles have been surrounded by more confusion than the humble SKS. I have owned both Russian and Chinese versions, with my latest addition being a superb Yugoslavian model.
The Yugoslavian SKS in my humble opinion is the best of the breed as far as fit and finish and accuracy is better than the Chinese versions. Yugoslavian SKS carbines often were equipped with a combined muzzle device - rifle grenade launcher, grenade sights and a gas cut-off, meaning a little more weight at the front compared to other versions. But to me the extra weight equals better balance and feel, which could be why I have gotten the best accuracy from the Yugoslavian SKS or it could be the fact that the Russian and Chinese versions have a chrome lined barrel, while the Yugoslavian does not? If anyone has an answer or opinion please feel free to post it in the comments section of this post.
The most important thing you can learn about any SKS is this, leave it alone! There are dozens of accessories available for an SKS but most do nothing to improve the performance of the weapon and some can really screw you up if you are not careful. Forget about folding stocks, high capacity magazines, scope mounts etcetera. Leave it as it is and it will serve you well. Take the extra money and buy an extra case of ammo, you'll be glad you did. Trust me on this one. See you have already saved yourself $100 or more by reading this blog. Don't forget to bookmark this site, and check back often. Now back to the SKS.
In general, the SKS is an excellent all-around weapon that offers slightly longer range and better accuracy than Kalashnikov AK-47, but, for military use, lacks the magazine capacity and selective-fire capabilities. But for survival use it's still hard to beat, especially when it comes to the cost/effectiveness issues. Don't ever feel under gunned if you have an SKS, a skilled man with a simple SKS is in a much better position then an incompetent one armed with the latest tactical weapon.
