Hey Everybody,
Well after debating back and forth over which way to go, modified AR15 or mini 14 or SU16... I just bought a modified AR15. It's a Stagg lower with a DPMS upper. It has a 20 inch bull barrel and flat top.

As well, you might notice that the 'pistol grip' is no longer there, it's been made into a California legal gripless rifle! I'm going to look into some of the other options as time and budget allow.

Right now the lower is sitting in a gun shop safe waiting my 10 day dros. I found it through a guy on the calguns.net website. And it was just one of the deals I couldn't pass up. I paid a bit more than I would have for a new mini 14.

Congratulations! If you weren't almost finished with your awesome home, I'd say move out of Kalifornia and throw a decent pistol grip on that baby. ;)
What sort of optic are you going with?
Nice rifle. Get one of those thumbhole stocks. It will strengthen a weak system anyway. I'm assumeing those are legal in Kali. still.

lol, ah yeah the gun laws here are one of my biggest peeves. But family keeps me here. And family is my number one priority.
Oh and of couse we are almost done with our house and then it will be time to start our farm!
Ok, on the topic of the stupid laws here, a thumbhole stock is as evil as a pistol grip and that makes it an 'assault rifle' and illegal! There are options and I'm going to look into them. But the important thing for me is that I will have a good quality rifle and in a SHTF scenario, it could quickly be altered with a pistol grip or other stock!
I'm actually surprised at how heavy the bull barrel is! But I'm not planning on having to pack over long marches! :-)
Oh, and I should add that this was my Valentine's Day present from my wife! (yep, I got a good one)

does it have a detachable mag?
Yep, that's why it has the 'gripless' design. I could go the other route with a fixed mag and put the grip back on. I'm going to take it out like this and see what it's like to shoot and then I'll decide. I personally hate the idea of having to break open the rifle to load it!

Cool, I'm sure that neat by-pod will make the heavy barrel more comfortable. Congrats.

Cool RAS! :D
Definitely keep us posted on the functionality of a gripless AR. Man, I've been in a cave for a while...first I hear about Jim Zumbo laying a huge mental turd, now Kali/gripless AR's...what next? :-/

I never had one that nice, but I did use mine ( minnie 14) in the southern california desert country. Alot. In 1989 to 1990. It was all that kept me sane. I couldn't do much else down there.

FYI, here is what my restrictions are...
California Definition of Assault Weapon
12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
(1) a semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one o=f the following:
(a) pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
(b) thumbhole stock.
(c) folding or telescoping stock.
(d) grenade launcher or flare launcher.
(e) flash suppressor.
(f) forward pistol grip.
The following definitions apply to terms used in the identification of assault weapons pursuant to Penal Code section 12276.1:
(d) "pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon” means a grip that allows for a pistol style grasp in which the web of the trigger hand (between the thumb and index finger) can be placed below the top of the exposed portion of the trigger while firing.

And that's under the CURRENT law, I don't think it will be long and they will find ways to close the loopholes and or just outlaw everything!

Wow. I'm persona non grata in CA, I guess. Mine has the pistol grip. I've added a vertical grip in front and it has a collapsible stock. And it's ready for a grenade launcher to be installed.
Now where the heck am I going to find a grenade launcher .............
Great purchase, rass! Enjoy it to the max!

hmmm, grenade launcher... I'd say either NV or TX!
I'm happy with the purchase, still haven't been able to get out and sight it in. Stupid house priorities! But when I have some time, I'll take it out and give y'all a range report!
