Anyone here ever participate in the program and qualify to buy a Garand? If so, what's been your experience. I have shotguns and rifles but never owned but have always wanted a .30-.06 and see some of the military surplus imports (Czech. and Yugo etc.) I guess if you buy an American Winchester or Springfield it's gonna set you back about $400. Just want any input from others thinking along the same lines. Thanks

They sell the Garands by various grades. Not all grades are in stock at any one time.
Regardless, they are good values. I have never purchased one, but am qualified by way of being a Service Rifle competitor, and also, an honorably discharged vet.
No FFL transfer fees to purchase from them either, gun comes right to your door!

I got an M1 from them for Christmas. The paperwork is no big deal, takes a couple of hours to get together. There can be a long wait, but that's part of the fun. I ordered a Service Grade, it is in great shape and shoots and functions perfectly. Has some cosmetic damage and wear, but beats the hell out of paying $1400 for a reproduction.
I recently ordered a Field Grade, but I haven't received it yet, so I can't comment on the quality. The whole program works great and I recommend them without reservation. Not to mention they are a great place to buy M2 Ball ammunition as well.
ETA: it is the Civilian Marksmanship Program

Just check out their website:
www.odcmp.com
Click on sales, it will step your through the process.
The only real hoops you have to jump through are joining a club that is affiliated with CMP, I joined the Garand Collectors Association online. That was $25, but you get a great magazine about the M1 four times a year.
The other thing is proving you're active in marksmanship training. This is real easy if you have been in the military or if you have a concealed carry permit. Otherwise you have to send in a witnessed target.
Once you get all of that in to them, you can order repeatedly for three years as long as your address doesn't change. It's a small headache for a great deal on a piece of American history.
