I had been looking at a Marlin 336 in 30/30 for over a year. I had owned one back in the early 80's and it was my first real deer rifle. Somewhere along the way I traded off my beloved 336 in a quest for more black rifles. My wife gave me a 336W this Christmas little did she know that it is almost exactly like the one I let get away so many years ago. This one is a keeper and will go on to my sons.

Congratulations, I've been drooling over one myself. It is a great all-around rifle.

The 336 is the perfect rifle for me. When I put it to my shoulder it fits like a glove. The length of pull is just as I would have ordered it had I ordered a custom made rifle. My eye falls right into the sights. The pistol grip is hand filling and places my shooting hand in a perfect position.
I believe the 336 30-30 is the best homesteading/country living rifle a person could own. It is easy to shoot and to teach others to shoot. It is a proven game rifle. It will take out foxes, coyotes, wild dogs and anything that wants to eat your critters too. You can load the 30-30 on the go and do not have to wait for it to run empty before you can reload. This is something you cannot do with most rifles. With the new LE ammo the 30/30 extends the distance they say out to 300yds on deer without a problem the jury is still out and we will have to see some dead deer data at that range first for a good evaluation. Anyway try one if you don't like it I will pay shipping from your place to mine ;)

Tuckahoe,
I'm just waiting for a deal on one.
I also believe you about summed up my feelings on the 336's. They're real sleepers in the all around rifle category.
A friend works for a major sporting goods chain. They have a full gunsmith service and are the warranty center for many firearm brands. Anyway, he said they rarely see a Marlin rifle in there and usually it's in for owner neglect i.e. dirt and no lube.

Congrats on the 336. I recently committed to a Savage bolt action in .7mm for long range hunting in Montana. I spent a boat load on a Leupold scope and all the options. Of course, a friend handed me a .30-.30 a week later. It was passed down to her due to a death in her family and she passed it on to me, due to her lack of interest in it. I had always wanted a lever action. I just thought one would be nice to have to pass down to my boys someday. This 336 is the SC model and was made in 1962. It was probably never taken afield and is in almost new condition without a blemish on the stock. The only signs of wear is on two white plastic spacers, one is between the butt and the butt end piece and the other is under the grip where there is another end piece. that's probably just old age and shelf wear. It shoots fantastic out to 200yards and for all the money I paid for the bolt action stainless steel .7mm with the compensator, I couldn't tell you which one I enjoy shooting more. I will never let that Marlin go.
