Jackie Clay has written an excellent article in this month's BHM about growing and using your own grain. We have more detail available here thanks to Karen (Shamrock), but it is an excellent read and will serve as a good list for food products from grains.

Pat

Are you looking for some grain for flour?

WRTN,

I am looking for grain growing for both making my own flour and for chicken feed.

However I don't think I will be able to grow really good wheat flour in this damp climate, although it sure grows well - all I have to do is spread out some straw on the ground and I have a wheat field.

I did do spelt this year- it's very green and bushy - it likes damp weather. I planted it with an Earthway seeder with rows 6 inches apart and it's all green now. Next year I am going to add Amaranth becuase I found out from the conservation district that it grows like a weed in our climate. Oats never did much here.

I think it depends on your climate if you can grow good wheat flour but not sure of course!

I know a farmer who grows wheat locally on a large scale. He sells it for $14 per 100 lb. bag. At that price, it is not hardly worth fooling with growing it.

Deberosa, too bad you are so far away, it would not be cost effective to ship that much weight.

You might try this place, it is a lot closer:
