We finally got it! The little collector tractor we have been looking for, for the acerage. She's in running order, has a live power loader, good rubber, tank heater (a must in SD), new battery and not a bad price.
She will be delivered on Sunday.
This will sure beat the daylights out of trying to clear the driveway with a scoop shovel come winter, and we have already lined up a little 11 foot disc to put behind her for $35.00, to turn up the garden. We can hardly wait!!!!

Awesome! Glad you found the tractor you were looking for! The proper tools always make the job go faster - and I'll bet every time you plow the driveway you'll be so glad you're not on that shovel!

My grandpa died in 1965 and his 1940 model H was sold.
I found it years later and bought it in 1984.
It ran when I got it but I never started the engine again.
It sat in my yard til July 2008 when I got a bush hog and needed a tractor to pull it.
It runs good!
Over the years, I rotated the engine twice a year and put oil down the cylinders and it paid off when I got ready to use it.

whooo whooooo ANOTHER SCORE! WE got an 11 foot disc from (Of all people) my ex husband for free to put behind the H and a 3 bottom plow from a co-worker for $35. *I think we are farmin now! Gettin the disc for free was a bonus, and told Red (coworker) what ex paid for the disc said that he was happy to get the plow out of the trees for that.

your about to find out that a H farmall is NOT a 3 bottom plow tractor and wont pull a 11ft disk thats doing more than scratching the surface.

I'll second that. I have a small Kubota (23hp). When I connect my disc (5 ft double gang), it becomes a struggle, until I go to 4WD. My 5 footer is heavy, an 11 foot disc must be a monster.

I pull a 12ft disc with my John Deere 4020.......

You can narrow that 11 footer by removing disks off both sides. It may look funny only disking 5 foot with a 11 foot disk but hey what ever gets the job done.

THE PLOW IS MORE THE QUESTION. MIKE ALREADY USED THE DISC ON SUNDAY TO TURN OVER ABOUT AN ACRE OF WEED PATCH. HE SAID IT WENT VERY WELL IN 2ND GEAR AT ABOUT HALF THROTTLE. THRE ARE NO WINGS ON THIS DISC. IT WAS ORIGINALLY A 15 FOOTER WAY BACK WHEN AND ALREADY HAS HAD THEM REMOVED.

MikenSue,

Is the disc a single-way disk or a tandem?

MIKENSUE

SINGLE WAY. THIS IS THE TYPE OF OLD MACHINERY THAT WAS USED BACK IN THE 30'S AND 40'S TO FARM HALF OF AMERICA
ORIGINAL STUFF, PULLED OUT OF THE TREES

MikenSue,
I have both a single-way disc for my AC's that is 11'. I also have a tandem 5'. With the tandem, I can only go aobut 4 inches into the ground. So, I have to make 2 or 3 passes to do it right. The single-way won't really disk the ground. It will only scratch it. You will have to pile some heavy weight on the disk and even then it will take several passes. On my single-way, I used big logs and strapped them on the top of the disk. I bought my tandem after I realized that the single-way wasn't going to do the job. lol.... I think I paid $75 for it and it is an old John Deere. I bought it and a mower for $75 each.

If your H can't pull the plow, you can remove one or two plows.... (can't thank of the name of the things, now...brain f**t LOL)... Anyway, remove one. If it the tractor still can't pull it, remove a second. If you first plow then you won't have as much trouble with the disk except that it will be rough ridin' trying to get the plowed ground disked.

Good luck. Have fun playing with it, but be sure to add a LOT of weight to the disk.

Thank You! Mike did pile some old heavy cement silo staves on it for weight before he started, but like you said, made several passes. First one way, then the other. Our hope is just to keep the dang weeds down. Pennycress, sourdock and thistle.
The old geezer we are getting the plow from swears that his dad farmed with an old farmall and this plow years ago. Hope he's not yanking our chain. Oh well, guess we've wasted $50.00 before. Will definately give your advice a try if the old H snorts too much about pulling it.
That's why this is such a GREAT place. A lot of good people with good ideas.

Im sure he did drag that plow with a old farmall.... a model "M" which was a 3 plow tractor.

Your H is a good sound work horse and with a few "updates" would do most anything you ask of it.

Just remember its a rowcrop tractor and not intented to be working on steep hill sides..... center of gravity is too high.

I grew up with my butt in the seat of a Farmall A, H, M 400, 706 and 856....... everyone of them a tough workhorse.

gotta love them Farmall H tractors, got one here myself, kinda,on loan from my wifes cousin, but I am lookin at one for myself, heck maybe even 3,a cub an H and an M,the only thing I don't like about them is the trike front end (H),the hill between my outbuildings is steep and I am uncomfortable on it,so I take the long way around, other than that I like it

Somebody please clear up something for me on the the subject of old Farmalls-did the tricycle front end on the rowcrops have one or two wheels? Around here the narrow front ends have 2 wheels and toward the coast they have 1 wheel(of course the wide frontends have 2 wheels)-Kevin

H and M Farmalls were available with wide or tricycle front ends.

Tricycle fronts were available in one and two wheel versions.

Howdy

Garsh I miss that stuff.

We had an H with a front end loader (narrow front). Loaders were not the sleek engineered things then they are today. And not near as tough.

Everybody said "why don't you put that on the M ?" Well our M was a Super M with wide front. It would have fit, but that tractor would have tore it up.

We also had a C, narrow front. And a Case J (?) about the size of the C. Both a little bigger, better chore tractors than the Ford 9N (3 speed ?)

For big tractors, we had a Case LA, and a John Deere R of some kind. When it was pulling you could hear it 1/2 way across the county.

I think the single wheel front ends are a row crop thing for stuff like beans, and cotton etc. that severely overgrow there rows ......... ?

Miss that stuff.
Enjoy

Fair enough-makes perfect sense.I know back in the day,the tractor pullers would use a single to break into a lighter weight class and maybe help weight transfer too-thanks Kevin

the tricycle front ends were used when culitvators were attached to tractors.

they allow you to drive into the culivator for mounting.
