View Full Version : Pop start a tractor
Ive got an old bolens tractor that I use to plow the driveway. But the starter took a poo yesterday and I'm waiting on the mail now...and of course we are supposed to get a foot of snow tonight. Will a lawn tractor pop start?

Hydro?? I'd need a lot more info to give even a decent guess on this.
If it's not a hydro, then there's a "maybe" it will work, but your going to need more than a little "bump" to start it to get it going, and in the snow i say it won't happen...

Not hydro, its a Bolens 1253 so you can look up the specs if you want.
I'm not worried about the snow, it's got chains and I can load a bunch of weight to make sure the tires spin. However, I don't know if the engine will spin that way, and I'm a little worried about breaking an axle. It has a disconnect on the axle for flat towing the tractor, but the guy I bought the tractor from said it would break if I tried to tow it without disconnecting that pin. But maybe that was in neutral and not in gear while trying to start it. I guess there is only one way to find out * ;D
For anyone wondering...you cannot pop start this tractor. Not sure why, but even in gear, it will not spin the engine.
Easy fix though, found an old industrial electric motor laying around and stole the brushes out of it. I had to cut them in half and do some grinding, but they worked great!
Now for the next problem...I can't push the snow piles high enough to make room for more snow lol. I might need to pay someone with a truck to push them back further. :-/

I believe it has a worm drive in the final, they do not push start, and that is why you can't push it in nuetral without unlocking the hub.
