Many years ago i had an old Ford back blade... It was a good blade but it was never ment to be on a modern 4x4 tractor, and i kept breaking it. Finally i fixed it up and sold it, and off i went to buy a HD back blade, that would take what a bigger tractor would give it!

I settled on a new Bush Hog 90-08 because it was "very" heavy built, was greasable, and articulated in every direction i'd ever want a blade to move! Bush Hog is a big name in tractor tools and makes many different products...

Here it is....

Well, the other day i was using it on a job and i broke it!! I haven't ever abused this blade, and it's never had a tractor in front of it anyway near as big and heavy as it's rated for!! In fact, even though i've had this blade for a long time, it's hardly been used at all, as i bought a dozer not long after i bought the blade! Anyway, lucky for me i was near the end of this job, and i finished it using the bucket on my tractor...

First thing i noticed is the lack of penetration on the factory welds. Those welds just weren't all that well done!! After looking the blade over better, it because obvoius why the 3 point tower broke off!!! The strength of this design comes from a very HD Hindge pin/shaft the goes verticle through the 3 point tower and down through the frame of the blade holding everything into place! The problem is, the shaft was held from dropping out with a 5/16" scroll pin, and the pin had broken, allowing the shaft to drop. So it no longer was supporting the tower!

It took some doing to get that broken scrool pin out as it was rusted in, but heating it red and pounding on it with a punch did the trick! I then chased the hole out with a 5/16" drill bit, and put a bolt through the hole with a lock nut on it!! This is how it should have been in the first place!!

Here you can see how the shaft sticks up for the 3 point tower to sit over it.... This is where the tower gets it's strength!!

As you can see, i have everything beat into place, and held there with a couple clamps!!

Now it's time to lay in the welds!! So i turned up the welder, so i know these beads have excelent penetration!!

All that was left to do is wire brush everything and rattle can some paint on the welds. With that done i now have my back blade ready to use once again!!

I hope you liked the picts... 8)

More great pics - thanks! Now I want a back blade too. ;-) Right now I do my best with the front bucket to smooth things over. That and mowing over the bumps with the brush hog!

Larry,

My mig welder is a PowCon 200. I've had it for many years now, and it's been a very good welder! It will also stick weld, but i rarely use it for that...as i have a very old stick welder that really welds smoooth. My dad bought it used for 50 bucks back when i was a kid and it still works great!

I wire weld 99.9% of the time these days...

Thats a nice size welder. 220 V right? I had a Hobart 140 which was pretty good until my shop burned to the ground. The wireing in the wall melted mostly from using the welder. ??? Oh well.

Sorry to hear about your welder and shop.... This is the exact reason i don't like to do things as cheaply as possible... It comes back to bite you later...

Yes, my welder is 220v, i run it off a 60 amp breaker and use .040 wire... It does a good job for me...

DM,

That's cool .040 wire is pretty good size. I never understood why the breaker never tripped. Who knows how old the wiring was the building was at least 40 + years old. Even after the fire when the FD inspector had to check the breaker box the 30 amp breaker wasn't tripped. He said every once and a while there is a bad one. The breaker was less than 4 years old that's when I had the box installed.

Take care

When ever i've put in a welding socket, i've always run new wire and installed a new breaker... Welders just pull too much juice to take a chance on old wire ect...

Many years ago i had a house fire that was caused by old electrical... so i know what a fire can do to you! I had just bought the house and wasn't even home when it started. (apparently the wire where it came into the house shorted out inside the wall)

Anyway, for the price of some wire and a breaker, it's just not worth it to me to take any chances!
