Aw, a few times hooking it up and you will get it smooth. I have an Italian made unit for the IH784 and it is a finely honed ballet of 3 point/clutch nudging, and perhaps a wiggle of the wheel. First time was a minor comedy!

Try propping the front of the tiller on some bricks.
I use a triangle I made of angle iron.
This keeps the front of the tiller up high enough to hook the pins in.
You really have to back up to the tiller square to keep from all the pushing to get it aligned.
Also keep a good stiff putty knife on you when you till, the cleaner the tines on the tiller the better it will work.
Remember to disengage the tiller when you raise it up,
I had some problems with this the first few time.

Maybe a 'quick hitch' would help?

Small suggestion: attach one end of a short light-duty chain to those clip pins and the other end to "something" (whatever is handy or you make handy) on the side bars. If the pins "somehow" come out - and, believe me, they WILL - they won't get any farther than the end of the chain.

You do loose those little pins with the circle of steel on them from time to time, especially driveing through brush clearing land... They are called "linch pins" and they cost about .20 ea. around here...

If your haveing to clean your tiller with a puddy knife, that's a clue that your soil is too wet to be tilling it.... A "little" buildup i don't worry about, but it should NOT be balling up in there or anything at all that needs to be cleaned out to "work better".

Hooking most anything to a 3 point can be a pain, but there are a few things to help you...

Always take the tiller off on a level spot. Back up to it squarely, and ajust the "ajustable" 3 point arm so it's level to the tiller when it's off. If you look at the 3 point arms you will see at least one can be ajusted so they are level. Once level they will raise and lower together makeing hookup easier..

Hope this helps,
