I haven't read anything newly published, but really loved "Cold Mountain" by Charles Frazier. Transports you to a differnt time and place.
Also, just finished reading "Secret go the wolves" by R.D. Lawrence - author and wife raised 2 orphaned wolf cubs, very well written and quite funny.
Most thoughtprovoking thing I've read lately is "A short history of progress" by Ronald Wright, a historic look at humankind's repeated efforts of destroying the environment we live in. Not exactly uplifting. though...

I have read (& re-read many times) "In Praise of Wolves" by RD Lawrence...it's a keeper! (a dream of mine to bring wolves back to Maine).
Reminds me of another favorite, "Never Cry Wolf" by Farley Mowat.
