The author was Gordon Dickson, and the book was about a young man who was trying to find his way in the world after the collapse of civilization. Though it was written around 1989, I read it last month after picking up a copy in a paperback exchange store. Very interesting reading and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes that type of fiction.
