He was a ranch hand by trade and through the cold months he stayed
By himself in the shop by the fire
While the cowboys would play with their horses all day
He’d fix tractors, feed trucks and tires

“Come with us” they’d cry “and give horses a try”
“That pickup belongs on the road”
He’d give them a wave and say “You boys behave.
There’s a tank in the lot overflowed”

When spring rolled around there were calves on the ground
The cowboys were busy as heck
“Grab a horse” they’d tease, “it’s like riding the breeze”
“I can’t boys this tractor’s a wreck”

“And if I get this put together, (depends on the weather)
I’ve got that old feed truck to fix
But if you think you can feed from the back of that steed
I can leave that old truck up on bricks”

When summer arrived the cowboys contrived
To get the poor guy on a horse
They’d plot and they’d plan, but that stubborn ranch hand
Was always too busy of course

Then one autumn day a cowboy named Clay
Asked him “What’s wrong with a horse?
Both me and the wife have rode them for life
And never had cause for remorse”

The ranch hand just shrugged and he looked kind of bugged
What he said made the old cowboy weep
“I like horses just fine, I like most things equine
But I don’t like the company they keep”
