An Old Man
I looked out over a frozen brook
And what did I happen to see
A Man was looking back at me,
As old as can be
I asked how he had spent his life
And where he had been
His answer was an evil smile
And a wicked grin
He told of fish camps and open seas
And catching fish as big as me
He told of mountains covered with snow
And the wind threw the trees
He had seen hawks
And eagles float gentle on the breeze
He had swam in oceans
And distance seas
He had swam among ancient ruins built by the Greeks
And had seen sea turtles and whales as free as can be
He told of seeing a celebration of a battle 1000 years old
And how they lost the war, if the truth be told
This man had live on mountain tops, swamps, and deserts
And his one desire was to be free
I asked the old man what now you are all used up
And what will it be
His answer came back strong and clear
And for all to hear and see
Used up Hell!
And I’ve only just begun
As the old man faded away
And I knew he was me
I looked out over a frozen brook
And what did I happen to see
A Man was looking back at me,
As old as can be
I asked how he had spent his life
And where he had been
His answer was an evil smile
