I have searched and searched for a food co-op to no avail. I last ordered some through a high-dollar health food store. I am sure the price has gone up, but there's got to be a better way. Can anyone help?

I live in the middle of wheat fields in Kansas and thought first about the Kansas Wheat Association, so I Googled looking for a wheat association in Alabama where you might get more information.

Alabama Wheat and Feed Grain Producers

Unfortunately feed grain and food-grade quality are processed differently, but maybe it's someplace to start within the state.

If you have a County Extension Office in your area, see if they have any sources for food-grade wheat.

Try to find some hard white wheat if possible, it's just a whole lot better for bread. Not as acidic and dark as red wheat varieties.

Check Wheat Montana's web site for a dealer near you:
http://www.wheatmontana.com/dealer.php

Wheat Montana Prairie Gold wheat is THE best wheat I've ever used, and I've used LOTS of different varieties over LOTS of years - including locally-grown wheat. The "odd" thing, I found it hidden on a shelf in the back of the store at Wal-Mart....

It's shipping that kills you when you have to order it from any distance away!!!

Good luck with your search.

Thanks for those tips, Karen. *I am familiar with my county extension's office and I am positive they won't have a clue. * *Wow. *You found wheat at Walmart? * *Wheat is available here as animal food, but nothing else.

It appears there is a Montana dealer about 140 miles from here, so I'll have to calculate the gas, etc. I'll also call the Alabama wheatgrowers group.

Thanks for your time and effort.
