The heart benefits of taking statin drugs may last for years, even after the drugs are stopped, researchers reported on Wednesday.
Men who took pravastatin for five years had a lower risk of death or heart attack even 10 years after they stopped taking the drug, Ian Ford of the University of Glasgow in Scotland and colleagues found.

In their study of 6,595 middle-aged men, the risk of heart attack or death from any type of heart disease was 11.8 percent for the pravastatin recipients, compared with 15.5 percent for volunteers who took a placebo for the first five years of the test.

The biggest benefit — a 40 percent reduction in the chance of heart attack or heart disease death — came while taking the drug, but the reduction was still 18 percent in the years after the initial study was completed.

My doctor put me on statins almost ten years ago when my cholesterol total was just barely 200. To him, taking statins are kind of like a flu shot. Which I got mine last night. Hope it wasn't too late. It takes two or three weeks to become effective and one guy at work seems like he already has the flu.

Wish there was some way to stop people with infectious diseases from coming to work.

Wish there was some way to get everybody to wash their hands when they go to work.

Oh well, I only have 18 more months to put up with these, dangerous, inconsiderate, poorly raised individuals. If I can last that long.

I went in sick many times: I was afraid not to. Offical warnings were given on the third absence. My co-workers did the same.

We worked in a hospital, by the way!

For me statins are too risky. Thus I find keeping the weight down, exercising, eating healthy, using soy lecithin, plus a smattering of vitamins works best....
