Hi all have a question about 6 week old piglets. The guy we got our 2 piglets from stopped by today. He has 5 hampshire duroc cross piglets that have hernia on the belly button , he says we can have them for nothing because he cant sell them to 4h kids for fair. Should I take them or will the hernia be a big problem? They have been vet checked have all shots & pig guy says they are fine for home fattening to butcher. Also how good a meat pig is a hampshire duroc cross? Thanks all

He's right. You can fatten for home. It shouldn't be a problem for you.
Just about any hog is a good meat hog. A hampshire duroc won't be quite as lean as a york, but they are a good cross.

Take the pigs! The hernias will likely close on their own. If one of the hernias gets really big with intestines falling into it then just go ahead and butcher the pig. Summer pig roast. But I do doubt that will happen. A herniated umbilicus is just a visual fault on show pigs. HampXDuroc should have excellent growth rate and grade a top carcass. Enjoy the windfall.
