Has any here had any experience in dealing with some one going bi polar?symptoms?

My ex was diagnosed bi-polar I've heard. I divorced him over 20 years ago. He was very erratic, angry one minute happy the next, also an alcoholic, not a good combo. I was young and stupid, you know, love will cure everything, Put up with it for six years and two kids. If some one has it and gets meds I think it stabilizes the mood swings but the have to stay on the meds and off the alcohol.
