Has anyone had any experience setting quail eggs or brooding the hatchlings? I found several dozen for sale that I gave to my hatching lady. I thought she would enjoy them, and they were a unique gift. She is a sweet lady, and I wanted to please her.
I told her I would take 6 chicks when they hatched, but I don't know anything about them. Can I just brood them under a heat lamp in a box or a bin of some sort?

There are a number of articles in the magazine, search from the menu on the left (Article Index). Quail are tiny little critters and are raised as quick meat birds and for their eggs. They look much like song birds and generally the breast is the only part of the carcass kept when slaughtered.

Mmm hard boiled quail eggs, does that bring back memories from my youth! I heard of a friend who was at a hunt club party where someone made deviled quail eggs but that is far more work than I've ever tried.
Quail and pheasant are both good back yard birds to raise. Very low maintenance and fun to watch while relaxing with a beer after a days work.

Are quail the type of birds that can just live in a house and come back to it like pigeons? Pigeon houses are great, no muss, no fuss, and they stay around quite well. They stay around just like chicken or geese. Will quail do that, or do you absolutely have to pen them?
