Hi

I have 2 roll of fence (9"-39"-6")to install for pig confinement. I do not have access to a wood lot, so I probably will get 4x4 treated post (same price as metal T post around here).

I was told to put a post every 10 feet, does this sound right? or overkill?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Hey Joe.

You say you have 2 rolls fo fence? but I don't understand the three sizes.

As to the type of post, part of that depends on what part of the country you are in. In the mid section of the country, "Hedge" or Osage Orange is the preferred post and are free for the cutting if you have them. You build a fence with hedge and the posts will outlive you.

If you do have to buy the posts, try getting that at a farm auction.

One more thought to consider is if you have to dig posts by hand... I would use wood for the corners and braces and go t-posts for the line... depending on the size of your hog lot.
Ten feet between posts is good enough for cattle, sheep, goats, etc. but not hogs. With ten feet, they will easily just lift it up and crawl out no matter how tight you stretch it. If you go ten feet, you will definitely have to do something else such as an electric fence inside the hog fence.

I used to keep hogs in 2 acres of timber. At that time I had the posts 8 feet apart. Now, I only get little hogs when I want to raise butcher hogs. I have an area where I use hog panels. They are rigid. I use t-posts and have them every 4 feet apart. Ain't nothing raising those panels up! LOL

Good luck.

I guess what I could have said in a lot less words is "no fence is ever tight enough or sturdy enough for a hog".

Paulnks

I should have mention there will be an electric wired 18 " from the ground.

the invoice describes the fence "hi-tens 9-39-6"
39" high with a 6x9 cross pattern

I will follow your advice, and space the posts a little tighter

thanks for you reply,

ok. so it's a 39" high fence... probably woven wire?

Good luck.
