Hi have some white "meat"chicks that are now getting their adult feathers. Feathers are white on body, on wings they are outlined in black . The feathers aren't straight they look like a home perm that only half took. Kinda J looking. Is the same on all the white chicks. Also have pale yellow chicks with 2 red stripes running down their backs. Any ideas on what kind they are ? Thanks

The chipmunk colored chicks will probably be red or red brown(black breasted red).. Meat chicks// are they the cornish X Rock type? Some of them do have deformed feathers. hard to say without knowing what they are for sure.. there is a feather breed called Frizzle. they can be any breed with the (F) frizzle gene which is located in the feather follicle and causes a structure abnormality.; it also causes abnormal internal organs as well. The birds which express the curled feathers should not be bred together, but the gene is dominant so any (f) non frizzled bird bred to (F) birds will express the abnormality.

Thank you Fancy for replying. Have no idea if they are cornish. Hubby got them & said tag said meat chicken. They looked like regular pale yellow chicks till the adult feathers started coming in. Now they are twice the size of the other chicks. Kinda cocky acting, strut around kicking cobs at the other chicks, standing on top of the waterer staring down at the others. Is time to move them to a seperate pen.Wont be any breeding of these chicks , they are for the freezer.

the first ones sound like frizzle or frizzle crosses. do they also have feathers down their legs? many breeds have a white body with darker wings.

the second ones sound just like some sort of cross breed or possible speckled sussex. ss chicks have the racing stripes down their backs.

Its actually kinda hard to know what color the chicks may be unless the parent stock is known. Good guesses can be made with a good descrition which most poultry keepers cant really do. there are really only 3 colors, if we count white and black as colors, that would be white, red(gold) and black. White is actually all colors combined and black is the lack of reflection of light in the visable range. Many breeds have down color similar to a chipmunk and it depends on the modifier genes to decise what the adult patter/color will be, such as the birchen, wheaton et cetera. Many colors are due to the structure of the feather itseld and how light interacts with it. the beetle green seen on good blacks is not actually a color just a reflwection of light on the feather structure. All black poultry, especially the better colore ones, have yellow in the chiock down and even a few white feathers as adults.
