Poking around in the clothing section for something close to the brown needed for my BDU t shirts, an employee walks up to me.

"Can i help you?"

"Yeah do you have any BDU t-shirts?"

"Not sure. Do you mean camo?"

"No sir, i just mean dark brown short sleeve t-shirts."

'Oh...No, sorry.but we do have a selection of stylish military style camo shirts and pants! Would you like to buy some?"

And being me, the closes thing to stylish i wear is either my AF Blues or my "Alien Abductee" shirt.

"Sir, im wearing authentic camo uniforms...why would i want to look at something that the annoying kids that i have to put up with wear?"

One of the said people walks up and starts making fun of me for being in my BDU's. He follows me as i walk off resisting the urge to sock him in the head.

How would YOU deal with this situation?

I certainly understand your difficulty... Our daughter was a Cadet Commander in the CAP, cadet of the year for the Kansas Wing, as was her husband the year before her. As teens in CAP, they felt their contrabution as a cadet far outweighed the ignorance of the general population. The maturity and experience they gained was far beyond their peers.

I can't tell you all the search and rescue missions our daughter was on. Some during dust storms and horrible summer heat. She actually located a downed helicopter. How do you prepare your teen for looking for an abducted child that they are sure has been murdered? They searched all those river banks, culverts, and under bridges for an entire weekend looking for that child. The search for an Alzheimers patient who has wandered off in the winter... All the flights they took carrying blood to hospitals in other locations in Kansas. You'll find CAP kids filling sandbags during a flood. Working the flight-line during air shows. Teens in the Civil Air Patrol are some of our communities best volunteers.

Just tell the "ignorant" you are in the Civil Air Patrol, an auxillary of the United States Air Force, serving your country and your community.

For the best gear, check out (Army) Surplus Stores in your area. That's where we outfitted our daughter.

Our daughter served in the Air National Guard (3 years) and our son-in-law is serving in the Army, so their CAP training served them well.

I'd love to say "sock 'em, shoot 'em or spit in their eye", but when you're wearing the uniform, you're truly standing for America...you did the right thing buddy ;-)

Only thing worse....In my CAP blues at a burger king. I have my name plate, which clearly has Civil Air Patrol and USAF AUXILIARY printed on it.

Some guy in line: so what do you do in the Air Force?

*at this point, had i NOT been in my CAP Blues, i woulda been slapping myself repeatedly for the fact that he looked at the UNIFORM, not the tag>*
