In the 60's our school was thought of really strict. If you wanted to smoke (no matter what your age), you had to do it out at the edge of the playground.
Every last one of us boys and many of the girls carried a pocket knife, thought of as a tool and not a weapon. The place was so strict, you couldn't even clean you fingernails with your knife in class unless you were finished with you work. I had to get the heck outta there, seemed like a prison to me, lol.

When I was in high school 1966-1970, one of the teachers had a sportsman club for students. He showed hunting and fishing films in the auditorium during school. He was an NRA instructor and once a month after school he would bring 22 target rifles and targets and set them up in the gymnasium. I earned all the medals for marksmanship before I graduated.

In shop class I built a very nice belt knife from an old file.

In shop class my cousin built a crossbow and one day during shop class we all took turns shooting it in the field next to the school.

I suppose none of that is possible nowadays.
