View Full Version : Bucket of crabs. A story.
A long time ago I heard a story that really says a lot about
they types of people that populate the world and forums like
this one.
It's a story about a bucket of crabs on a beach that when watched
became a story in itself.
The fisherman noticed that every time one of the crabs tried to crawl
out of the squirming mass of crabs to the top one of the other crabs
would reach up......and pull the crab back down into that swirling
mass of crab bodies.
Over and over various crabs would try to escape, to get out of that
bucket back to freedom, but everytime they would fail because the
other crabs just wouldn't permit some other crab to better itself.
What the crabs couldn't see was that if just a few would work together
they all could get free. No, they just settled for their self imposed prison.
The fisherman watched all afternoon but not one crab was able to escape
the downward pull of all the other crabs. Not one......
I suppose there's a lesson there if you think about it.......
No matter where you are or what you do or say there's alway a crab
just waiting to drag you down. So it is here..........

The smartest crabs don't stand on line to get food or crawl into a nice little box for an easy answer..and that's why they are in the bucket.
All forums are is a place to voice an idea and that's it. It's the new era of coffee house BS'n....only now we have our own cups ;D

(Ralph)"Hey Everybody! LOOK!!! Bucks trying to make a run for it! He's trying to get out of the Bucket!"
(Fred)"So, Ralph. What's eatin' ya? (wink)"
(Ralph)"Dude, Bucks gonna get away. He won't be safe out there in his natural habitat!"
(Fred)"Ralph. Chill. He only uses the bucket for exercise. We usually wind up having to help him get back IN." ::)

I got to go along with what walls0stone says. It's just a place to hang out when I want to read something interesting and maybe share an idea or point of view. Nothing more, nothing less. When it comes to forums, I guess you could look at it kinda like this. If a farmer plants a field of beans, he won't get corn.

Yes Mad, you get my idea.
Forums have some flaws. A, inflection of voice.. remember the add were all they said was "Dude"... it's the way words are spoken and the face is used to express an idea. So unless you wright for a living, you may not come across as you ment to...My self included.
Also, when your with a preson in person, you may not say the realy nice or realy mean things you may say in here. It's sad to say...but I might not be extra kind to some people in person as they would take it wrong... But when was the last time a stranger gave you a complament, and you didnt' feel like he was fishing for somthing. I know of an in-law that took it way to far when I told her I liked the dress she had on..
and the other side, you may talk to another person in a dissrespectful way if you don't fear them....after all this is just text on a page, it can't bite you.
Now I'm at this desk more than normal for a few reasons, but personaly, I think that the realy smart people who have the most to offer are not even on such forums as this.
I am not saying we have nothing to offer each other, but I am saying that the very best backwoods people...those who have full pantries, know all about guns, have no money trouble and grow lots of chicks are doing it. Those people are probly on a dating web forum, or somthing they don't know.
Also, local clubs in my area are seeing more and more people from 25-36 joining becouse real people are still the best. Somday I think this fad will change again and we'll all say "hey remember when we talked to each other in person?"

It's fitting that our very own Buck would tell a story with "crabs" in it.
Fitting, Indeed. ;D

I share ideas with co workers and sometimes get pretty good feedback as well as links to frugul living and survival. I got this link from a co worker. Discussing ideas in various ways opens up a whole new world. Forums are great educational tools when used right. I am years ahead by using various forums opposed to just talking to folks or reading it in a book. I see forums as a valuable link to getting information. I know a lot of folks wouldn't say what they do if they were standing toe to toe with the people they have been saying it to on the web. Just my thoughts .
Found this that reminds me of the "crabs" in the story........

I keep hoping the mods on this board will do their damn job and collar
some of the yahoo's that attack me and make this place so miserable for
others.
Mods will move topic that they 'think' are not general but won't
lift a finger to stop harassment, net stalking, or other forums
of uncivil behavior here at BWH.
One can take it from this inaction that the mods are just as bad ,and
approve of , as the knuckle heads that are so uncivil on BWH.

Buck, it seems to me that the forums here at Backwoods Home is a privately owned business, as is the magazine itself. Thus, the owners/moderators are free to moderate the boards in any manner they see fit. This isn't 'Wal Mart', and it's not a government operation. It is owned and operated by private individuals who have the final say-so. I understand that institutions do not all operate that way in your world, but they do here. In the U.S., we still have private ownership of things.
Perhaps the Homesteading Today forums would be more to your taste?

You know I think Buck is trying to tell us something. Look at the story he posted "Bucket of Crabs " not pail of crabs. He is getting his name in there BUCKet. Maybe he is trying to tell us that part of him is really a Conservitive Republican and every time he tries to express his Conservitive views one of the Democrat crabs pulls him back dowm. Keep trying Buck we are all here to support your Republican side coming out.

Crabbing is a good, cheap past-time. Get a pkg. of chicken necks or livers, a roll of nylon twine, dip net, ice chest, lawn chair and something good to drink, and you're set. Find a shady spot beside the bay or off the jetty, maybe under an uum-bra-lah so you don't get sunburned, and lure those delicious little crustaeceans in. You know when you throw them into an ice chest full of ice, they get parlyzed, but when you dump them out on the ground they revive and crawl off? Blue when you catch them and orange when you cook them? And the meat is wonderful dipped in garlic butter?
MMMMmmmm.........a bucket of crabs.....

Just don't think so, Walt. I risked my life getting in that bucket, held em all off, and helped him escape. He only stayed out for 56 minutes. Crawled right back in, jus like Ozark said he would.

Bucket of crabs, just another unnecessary, unclean and unwanted social desease and in this case damn near impossible to get rid of. I'm thinking after this past years infection ole bucket is just "our" run of the mill troll type masochist that loves getting his backside handed to him on a daily basis. Poor dear just can't get enough self-inflicted woop-a$$ and his antics do get old, I suppose just like any "poor me" illness. This last 3 months I sence life has maybe handed the ole bucket a few more lumps than normal as hate may well be taking hold as clearly depicted for one and all of us here in the Backwoods. Perhaps his miserable life and physical limitations are in a downward spiral with no good alternatives and his hate as redily portrayed in this thread is taking over and unfortunately we are his easy and available targets. Some are more worthy than others of our pity, and in this case I think the bucket is.

Sadly, Rick, THE only reason you post trash like this is......
Because on BWH forum you get away with it.
How sad.........

Your probably right Rick. It seems his only goal in life is to post crap he knows will give him negative attention. I know Buck understands right from wrong but it seems he is dead set on stirring the pot, calling names and pointing the finger at the ones that strike back at him. You can't continue on the same path of hate and discontent without folks just getting fed up. It really wouldn't matter now what he would post as the group as a whole has had it with him. Buck, you really are doing an injustice in posting. You are being consumed by your own hate and it is eating away at you like a cancer. The moderators would be kind in removing you from this board. But you would probably find a way back in, under a different name and continue with the nonsense. I had hope you would have found a way to make peace with yourself and the members of this board. I see it was a foolish thought on me.

So you hide from the big kids behind the teacher in school Buck? I’m guessing you became and expert at retracting a wedgie.
All the world trebles at your Fiery Intellect.
Your pity is not needed, nor the fine posts that actually consist of links to articles other people have written on line.
What is your interest here Buck? To save the unwashed masses of uninformed people you view as sheep or fools?
Never once have I seen a post of yours that came from your own personal experience, mostly pretentious rhetoric, consisting of your word of the day toilet paper vocabulary, posted in a format more suited for basic reading level.
This is a forum, not Yale, not Harvard. There are no Degrees, the learning never stops. Yes, some on this sight have clicked the ignore button on me. Hats off, no offence. I can honestly say that some of the people here who disagree with my views have impress me at times...even when they strongly disagree with my post personally.
Yet I've never once seen anything from your text that I might call note worthy or sea worthy. Thank God this forum is not written on paper, it would be a terrible waste of pulpwood.
If you know of sights were you fit it, I'd honestly like to see you in them with those who see eye to eye with you.

What a small, trivial and insignificant after-thought, the disgruntled the disheartened can become ole fart, when seething madness and discontent are their oath and reward oh what a sour old tart . *No peace in his life, only blackness and hurt find welcome to the sightless and miserable, and the blackened ole heart. *The unfortunate lout by circumstance or choice takes on the mantel of hate, for humanity at large and the just and honorable in the backwoods home by charge. *The anguish, the agony, the sadness and woe - just as we would grieve for the injured dog we anguish for you so, lying helpless in the street our hearts go out, to this crippled heart truly, the son of misery hopelessness and despair as he goes, yet around and around and around with a shout, down the way of the tidy bowl route.

Now with that said, and quite well I will add, maybe our moderators will find it in their hearts to put this dog to rest. Unless they are keeping him on for the ratings, I should think not. Hate and discontent rate low most of the time.

First rule of online forums - NEVER get into a debate with a troll. It only adds to their self-importance, which is why they do it. Don't feed the trolls.
Most trolls remind me of the pink-faced fat businessman kneeling on the floor in front of the leather-and-stilletto clad dominatrix, hands tied behind his back, screaming, "PLEASE don't beat me!" Sorry, only if I get paid for it. :o ;D 8) Leather cleaning is expensive, and my time is valuable.
Peace,
Wonderful it seems admin has had to intervene in the school yard on my watch. This does not bode well for the folks who can not resist the urge to poke fun maliciously and those lemmings who all to easily follow suit. Those that bait and run also.
CONSIDER THIS YOUR ONLY WARNING
It will stop immediately.
I will personally follow it from board to board if I must.
There will be heads on the lawn I guarantee it.
This forum was nice and peaceable for quite some time.
Discuss philosophy in here or leave no exceptions.
