The town I live in is small. Only about 150 people. The majority of the people who live here have been here for two or three generations. I have lived here over 20 years. I raised my sons here. Most of the kids here start kindergarten together and progress through our little three room school to graduate from the eighth grade together here. Then they are off to high school in a town 40 miles away. As you can imagine this forms very strong bonds and friendships between these kids.
Early this morning one of our local boys was killed in an auto accident right outside of town. His pickup rolled and then caught on fire trapping him inside. Our local fireman desperately tried to free him from the vehicle, but no amount of locally had rescue equipment could free him. He died as his extended family here in the community tried to free him.
My sons and I are very close to him and his family. His mother babysat my sons while I worked their entire lives. She was a surrogate mother to them in my absence. Her sons are as brothers to my sons. As you can imagine this has struck our family very hard and it is as if we have lost one of our own.
I am very angry. The bartender who served this boy, (he is 22 so of legal drinking age) has a reputation for pushing alcohol on customers. I know that he made his own choices, but he should have never been allowed to drive. This bartender also has a reputation for selling alcohol minors. I want to see her nailed for this. She deserves it. I know it will not bring him back, but maybe it will keep this from happening to another kid.
Please send prayers our way. For my family and for that of the boy. He was a good kid, everyone liked him. He did not have a habit of going out and drinking on a regular basis. My family, his and this community will feel the loss for a very long time
