OK. I just bought a 20" refurbished flat screen monitor on line for $89. I didn't even think to see if it came with any kind of warranty.

Now I've gotten an email that says I can BUY a warranty for $13 from another company.

Did I just make a great big boo-boo buying this monitor? Or would it be one to buy (or not buy) the warranty? I thought it would come with SOME kind of warranty!

Carol Ann, I bet it has some kind of warranty even if just for 30 days. But, if it is refurbished and from a credible website, I wouldn't worry too much.

Ditto what Paul said.

Check it out if everything on the monitor works ok, then don't bother with the warranty. Not worth the extra 15%

Most of those aftermarket warranty are just extra profit for the company. People don't use them.

The only thing I'd pay the extra for is an expensive laptop.

that warranty is to see how big a sucker you are. most of the time the things they warrant are already covered by the manufacturer's warranty, or they bury some clause in the fine print that doesnt obligate them to anything. theyll have something in there that says "if its covered by the manufacturer, you have to take it there first" then theyll say somewhere else "warranty protection is null and void for items purchased over 1 year ago" or something like that. I never buy any warranty. if something breaks i take it back and yell at the manager. It doesnt matter how long ago it was. they dont want you making a scene in the consumer electronics and driving away customers.

I don't normally buy the warranty, I only get one on big ticket items. I bought a warranty on my new TV, The manufacturers warranty was 1 year. I intend to own the TV for a heck of a lot longer than 1 year. So I purchased an extended 5 year warranty. When I bought my DSLR I also dropped some extra cash for a warranty. It was a good warrenty, they would replace the camera even if all I had was one peice with a serial number on it. About the only thing it didn't cover and I don't know why was fire.

Not to worry, carol. Not to worry. ;)

All manufactures measure quality by a term called "defects per thousand".
That means in each thousand units made a the percentage of defective units
is the measure used. That measure must be kept low to be known for quality. This is where Refurbs come into the picture.

I prefer and will buy Refurbs due to the fact that all refurbs have already
had their early hour failures and have been bench repaired and tested to
a level no "new" product has. In other words it's a better product than new.

My Mac computers have been refurbs for a long time (saved a BUNCH of
money!) with not one problem over the years. I buy other product that
are refurb also since I know how these products get tested and repaired
better than a new one.

So as I said, Not to worry, carol. ;D

Since transitioning to laptop co,puters im 2005 I have always bought a 3 year warranty on laptops, had the best computers I've ever had and except for the 2 current ones I have collected free replacements on warranty eventually on everyone. HP is fantastic witheir warranty service and I don;t think I;ll ever buy anything else!

I had a fateway desktop a few years ago which was jubk and it took me over a year ti fet a reolavement, no more gateways 4 me!

Just MHO FWIW!

Good luck.

The companies selling warranties love them.
They collect up front and most people never collect anything for their money.
I never buy a warranty.
I have bought 5 refurbished Dell laptops and they have all been great.

Those warranties are worthless. You didn't make a mistake. I almost had some kid from Staples crying a few weeks back because I kept refusing a warranty. After the third time they tried to convince me to buy the $39 three year warranty on a hundred dollar item, I really got firm about what a crooked crock they were. I really thought the clerk was going to cry. I didn't mean to sound that mean.
They must get a commission from selling those worthless things.

I would not consider buying a portable product without an extended warranty. On two of my recent Mac laptops I've had to use that warranty. Apple had the replacement back to me by overnight express. On the other hand, my desktop iMac, which I did not warranty, is five years old and I've never had a moment's problem with it.
