Has anyone ever tried raising bluegills in a large (~400 gallon) stock tank?

I'd been reading about tilapia but I'd rather go with a native species.

Thanks for any info.

Ozarksnick,
When I was a "pup" in the sixty's my mothers uncle had a farm/ranch down in south Texas, He had a large concrete tank beside the windmill that he had bluegill and a few catfish in. It was a blast to go out to that tank with a fishing pole to get some supper.

Do you remember about how many gallons was the tank and about how many fish were in it?

No !
But a guess would be 750 to 1000 gallons and hundreds of bluegills.

Hi Nick, We tried this a couple years ago and didn't have any luck at all. Of course our tank was much smaller (I think only 100 gal). We had an old swimming pool pump that we used to put oxygen in there and circulate the air and put cinder blocks in the bottom for places for the fish to hang out. Not sure why they died, but die they did. Perhaps not enough good bacteria in the water when we added the fish. Good luck if you try, hope it will work out for you. Do you by any chance have the book Back to Basics? It has tons of great homesteading info. I keep it next to my chair in the front room!

I've raised Bluegills in a 30 gal aquarium, more as pets than anything else. Fed 'em mealworms and other bugs. They got so big I had to take 'em back to the river! They were easier to keep than tropical fish-no heater required. I don't see why you couldn't raise some in a tank of several hundred gallons. Keep the water clean and the fish well fed, and you have another food source.

I did this with some fish i caught from a pond when i was younger. Worked out just fine.

I've always kept fish....salt water and fresh water.....love em all!

Farm and fleet has its annual "fish days" in the spring....you can get fish at decent prices locally

if you keep the tank outdoors lookout for temps that get too high.

set up your tank a few weeks ahead and let it run so you are sure there is plenty of O2 in there. it could also give chlorine a chance to evaporate from the water if you have that where you are.

also, if the tank is outdoors....lookout for racoons! i did some landscaping for cash for a guy years ago when i was in college....he had me put in a pond. and spent all sorts of money on Koi. they were all eaten within 2 days.
