Older laptops used Nicad batteries that benefitted from depleting the battery charge and then fully recharging them. This was done to prevent "memory" issues which effectively meant the length of charge retention was reduced.
Newer laptops, and many other devices, use lithium ion batteries that do not fall victim to the same problems so you don't need to perform the maintenance which benefitted older versions. Doing so once in a while will just verify the length of time you can run on battery power, not really help the battery life.
