Bringing up the internet

Anyone here know what would make a computer not want to bring up the internet but if the wiring is switched to a different computer that one works okay?
DD had to switch things from her computer to mine the other day as hers wouldn't bring up the internet no matter what she tried. All suggestions are appreciated.

I can help but I need more info! how are you connected to the internet cable? DSL? also do you have a router/firewall? I assume that you are running windows 2000 or xp?

Silly question from me,,, is the network card working. Could have gotten fried. Or the same thing happen to a dial up modem. I had to replace a network card in my brother in laws pc. You could see the scorch mark on the network card next to a diode.

go to the "network connections" or something similar. disable the connection, then enable it again. it should work
