We're new to raising our own beef. We acquired a black angus cow and her hereford/angus steer calf. About a month ago we separated them to wean the calf who is almost a year old. How long do we need to keep them separated? I read that for beef cattle you need to wait at least 3 months. I'm not wanting to wait that long because of limited space and my sheep require the pasture that the calf is in. Why would 3 months be necessary. [Another bit of information - the cow is ready to calf again in about 6 - 10 weeks or so. How will the weaned calf respond if they are in together at that time? (We have no other cattle on the farm)]
