Limewire is a pretty nasty deal. Spyware is usually installed along with the program and the infected files that come with some of the downloads are an added bonus!
Addtionally, when you use limewire, your connection can be used for added bandwidth in other areas which would make all internet connections in your house react slower.
I'd dump the limewire. If you choose not to, run some spyware cleaners like spybot or adaware and also a decent antivirus like Trend Micro or Kaspersky. Additionally, check your shared folders in Limewire and your bandwidth settings. Only run the program when you are using it and ensure it is not running as a service.

I think Itunes is pretty much clean other than some advertising. Limewire can be quite a pain however. Perhaps you can either limit the bandwidth utilization through limewire or even your router. This would give an upper limit to that computer so it won't be an issue in the future.

How is your network setup? In other words, is it a modem -----> router ---->computers?
Let me know what kind of hardware you have as far as you modem and router or switch.

I don't have a Netgear router but in most you should be able to limit the bandwidth to a specific IP address, each computer when connected to the router will be given it's own IP. You can also block IP addresses or even type of connections, expample I don't want my kids on P2P so I can set up a rule in the router to block those ports from opening.
another thing you can look at is a K9 Web Protection, http://www1.k9webprotection.com/ Although it doesn't work across networks you could install it on each machine, I have it on the computer the wife and kids use, works very well and you can set sites to block. When you go to a site that is blocked you get a a screen that asks for admin password, which you set up, you can then limit the amount of time on this site, default is 15 minutes, after that it goes back to blocked. This works well with the kids as there are some sites I don't want them on but there are a few games that they do like to play, so I give them 15 minutes on the site, they play their game and then when done it locks them back out.
And it's free

Sorry to be a pain but there are 4 versions available for that router. Could you identify which version you have? Here is a link to help:

I briefly read through the manual and didn't see anyhthing that stood out pertaining to the bandwidth limit for one or more computers.
Here is a link that may get you in the right direction:

I registered to help this person and typed this long thing out with links, advise and stuff. Somehow the forum software dumped it when I hit post.
To summize.
Dump Limewire, get Bitcomet, use www.torrent-finder.com, download some free content, free books, free music and leave it in your shared folder, remove all completed downloads from the shared folder, use the options to limit upload to around 10k.
The upload from the limewire is what is messing with your connection, downloads not really a big deal, the uploading is what hurts, limit it.
ALways scan each file for virus manualy.
I had a first post to be proud of, a literal How To fileshare safely, but to heck with it, if this one don't post either, I'm gone.

Bit comet is a torrent tool. Torrents are another form of file sharing,
You use torrent-finder to search for the thing you want to download, click on that thing and it opens another page and y9ou click on the download link and then Bitcomet downloads it for you.
There are many rules in filesharing to do it safely without trashing your network with a virus or Trojan.
Maily be sure to move new completly downloaded content into a different folder so you don't get caught as easily. You are aware that you are breaking the law when you download music or movies, right? You are basicaly a thief. And getting caught can really cost you.
That said, I;m a filestealing fool. Not movies or music, I download software, expensive software, just so you know I'm not making judgements.
Did limiting the uploads help? What kind of connection do you have? A dialup connection should limit it to 1 or 5k.

You ISP won't care who it is when they get a letter from Disney saying that you are sharing their movies and they cut you off.
Make sure they move all complete downloads to a different folder.

You first have to uninstall limewire, then use bitcomet and use torrent-finder.com to search for what you want. You really don't need to limit downloads as they won't hurt yyour coinnection that much.
