my old computer died. my husband got a new laptop. Big trouble for me. I am nottouching mouse or anything amiss, but parts of words show up three lines up,or two words back.
lost message five times sofar, click backspace and poof it is gone, even off the forum. words that I have not typed have showed up. is there a special trick for typing on a laptop? this is taking me forever just using my two index fingers and holding on to my thumbs.
I have not been able to post anything. my husband has no problem with it. am wondering what am I doing wrong. will post this before it disappears

Hmmmm..
Did you spill something on it?
Plug a regular keyboard into it.

I occasionally drag my wrist or part of my hand across the touchpad and it acts similar to what you are explaining. Like Martin says, hook up a traditional keyboard if that is feasible. Otherwise I'm not real sure what to tell you.

Ha! Your computer is posessed like mine was a few weeks ago! Does it have VISTA? I am thinking it's the VISTA. I called the store - complained mightily and within an hour the symptoms totally disappeared like magic!!! Well the screen still jumps from small to large if I touch it wrong somehow...
Something very strange for sure!!!

Debrosa I can relate to the Vista I upgraded to a new laptop back in Nov another Dell and had no choice but vista. This past week programs where no running correctly. Issues like system restore would not work or spell check on forum sites and permanent pop up blocker ect. Spent a hour and a half on the phone with tec support. Unfortunanetly no good answers their finally just had to wipe out the entire system and reinstall everything I was a we bit upset to say the least. >:(

Had a problem with a new laptop with Vista my son bought just after Christmas.
Was getting free-down loads off the NET when I got a "Time to upgrade note" from Micro Soft, so went for it. Turns out to be like 24 patches for Vista.
Knocked out all INTERNET capabilities and programing I just installed.
Had to go the restore route, back to the date and time the UPS driver delivered it here. What a pain......Weez

No it does not have vista. it takes me for ever to get a post done as I am forever correcting. The black line that is at the end of the word and sort of moves ahead of the typing, has a mind of it's own and skips around in my text and I get to look for it, erase what got deposited someplace in the middle and move it back to where it belongs. repeat this every five words. it gets really strange when words that I have not, repeat NOT, written show up.

I repair heavy equipment, etc. for a living-not computer savvy, but I have found over the years it is usually the basic simple stuff that gives the most trouble. The simple solutions are often overlooked in a frenzy to find "a problem." My operating rule-go for the stupidest thing first, THEN look deeper.
I am just wondering-since you share this thing with your husband, do you two have different settings, passwords, etc.? Just strikes me that if it works fine for him, perhaps there is something skewed in your personal settings that is affecting this.

If it only happens when you use it, then something must be different from when your husband uses it.
Is the lighting the same?
Do you wear any jewelry he does not?
Do you keep a cellphone near and he does not?
Are you using it near a TV or radio or phone or florescent light ? Or anything else electric or battery powered?
Does it only happen when you are online, or only in a Forum, or does it happen all the time?
The best way to figure this out is to conduct and experiment. If it happens every time you use it, regardless of whether you are online or not,
First, try using it in different rooms.
If it happens to you in in every room but not to your husband, start removing things you are wearing, one at a time, starting with watch and jewelry, and typing a bit after each removal until it stops or there's nothing left to remove. If it continues...do you have any metal implants?
If it only happens in one room, then start unplugging things in that room, again, typing between each to check. Then have hubby start removing things near the computer to a far-away room.
Eventually, you should discover what is causing the problem. However, if all else fails, bring it back to the store, show them what is happening, and let them figure it out.
And please let us know if you solve the mystery.

This sounds a bit like the case of the jumping cursor that my boss had with his laptop. (Yes, he WAS jumping around cursing, but I refer to the blinking line, not the bleeping boss!) He'd be typing along and suddenly the cursor would be elsewhere in the document. It made him even crazier than usual.
I did some research for him and found two possibilities:
Do you have an infared mouse? (wireless) - sometimes they pick up signals from someone else and do their own thing. That wasn't our cure, though - this next thing was:
His Dell laptop had a very sensitive on-board mouse buttons. His thumb would barely brush it when he was typing - and it caused the cursor to jump. I temporarily solved that part with a piece of plastic from a package - taped in place, it cleared the mouse buttons and kept his thumbs from brushing it. We re-loaded his mouse driver and set the sensitivity on the lowest setting.

Make sure you are not inadvertently touching the little mouse button directly above the "B" key.
