I Have cable internet (Charter) And they sent me a modem & it was broken. I got really crappy speeds at night but great speeds all day. I made them swap it out & now I'm getting the full 5mbps I am supposed to.

One thing for Dialup users to consider, I may add, is make sure your modem is 56k, as I have an aunt who put a dial up modem in her new dell & got terrible speeds.. the reason: it was a 28.8k modem, which must have been God aweful for her !!! LOL

ANyway, just keep in mind Modems, even those provided by your service provider are subject to failure, so before you pull all your hair out like I almost did, check to make sure it isnt your Modem !!!

Additionally, you can get even better performance if you get an actual hardware chipset modem as opposed to a "winModem". With the hardware modem, it does all of the work so your computer doesn't have to. WinModems require software which relies on your computer in turn costing performance. Just some thoughts. US Robitics makes some as well as 3COM.
