I may need to buy a DVD player and was wondering what you think of getting one from a pawn shop? I'd really like one of the portable ones that comes complete with its own screen as I don't think I can hook one up to my TV. TV is an '87 Sony Linytron( or something close spelling wise) and right now I've got rabbit ears on it.
Do you folks have any suggestions as to brands, etc? I won't have a lot to spend and may have to wait until January to get one so I'll keep an eye out here for comments. Thanks.

This will take the audio/video information from the CD player and convert it to an R.F. format so the TV can accept it through the tuner. (CH. 2,3, or 4)

I have seen them at the Dollar Store around here for $30.00. Walmart has them for $35.00-$40.00.

You can also put a drive in your computer. Most bottom line CD burners also read DVD nowadays.

This is a subject I know ALOT about.

Walmart has one of the best deals out on a dvd/mpeg/divx player (made by panasonic)

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4910374

The great part about these players is they play the more internet friendly divx/xvid movies (.avi) as well as (wma) and (mpeg) besides the standard DVD, or VCD or SVCD formats which is the standard for most DVD players.

What does this mean to you ? it means you can download movies & burn them to a cd (or dvd depending on movie size) and watch them on your home dvd player instead of the computer, no matter what format they were in when you downloaded them.

In the past one would have to download them, then they would have to convert them to either VCD/SVCD/DVD to play on the home TV, But not with this Divx/DVD player.. Simply burn it & no matter what format it is in it'll play on the tv.

Also, when you play movies downloaded from the internet, they usually don't fit the screen (or were formatted for a big screen) .. This player also will allow you to resize the movie, so it fits perfectly onto the tv you're watching it on.

For less than $50 this dvd player does what other $500 dvd players will not do:

Media Support

DVD+R/+RW - Play
DVD-R/-RW - Play
CD-R/RW - Play

Formats Support

DVD Video
Video CD
SVCD
DivX
MPEG-1
MPEG-2
DivX 3.11
DivX 4

All in All I Highly reccomend this dvd player. I have one hooked to every tv in my house !!!
