View Full Version : Cussing in the rectory - software won't install!

I spent half a day on Christmas Eve, trying to install the QuickBooks software on a new hard drive for my sister's church, but got one error after another!
I tracked down some of the errors and got around them, but the last one, an internal error, stopped me. I don't have the error number with me, but the box said "Internal error." I did a net search there, and only found sites that wanted to scan for spyware. Since it's a new hard drive, there can't be any spy ware yet (and there wasn't, when I scanned it - )
Does this mean that there's something wrong with that new hard drive that they paid to have installed? The guy that put it in accidentally erased the old hard drive, and trying to put back their old software has been an absolute nightmare!
Any advice on this?
Thanks!

PS -
In lieu of cussing, I did mostly teeth grinding and pounding on my forehead. I really think a couple of smoky words muttered might have helped, though! :P

Hard to tell without seeing what it is doing, anytime hardware is changed it could cause issues, anytime software is removed improperly it will cause problems.

yeah - without knowing what has been done, what system (XP, 2000, etc.). Windows, no big secret, is a confusing mess. The DLL's alone can give you nightmares. I worked for an outfit once and we had a crucial piece of software that came out with an update that used a DLL with the same name as an existing DLL - just overwrote it. If we hadn't been watching, we would have had a devil of a time figuring out the problem.
Copying software from backups can give you problems. The best deal with windows is to reinstall everything from the disks, then import existing data. Sometimes there is no graceful way and you have to finesse files into directories - a real nightmare....
I worked with quickbooks many years ago - my experience has been that intuit software is usually well done, though the data files are proprietary. I hope you have data backups, chart of accounts, etc or else they will have to be manually re-entered. <...sigh> was so much simpler with dos and desqview...
Whoever the computer guy was that hosed the hard drive - you should put a skull and cross bones next to the name in the phone book so they don't get called again. You have my condolences...

Pat
if you still have the old harddrive I'd suggest running EasyRecovery Pro 6 on it. it will restore the old data, even if you have formatted 5 times.
I recently had a power failure while partitioning a drive & it was unrecognizable. so I f disked it & was about to reload windows when someone gave me EasyRecovery Pro 6 & I used it & it restored it to pre partitioning it, even after an F disk !!!
I have this if you'd like to "try" it
Just PM me !!
