I live in Northern Idaho, I'm getting chicks for the first time this year. I have an unused room to set up a brooder in, but how many weeks do I keep them in the brooder before I move them to our unheated coop? We will be getting the chicks in late March, by mid-April it should stay above 32 degrees at night, but we've had snow as late as June before. We have no feasable way of getting electricity to our coop for emergency heat. Thanks, Russ

I never keep them inside more that three weeks. They go out and stay under a heat lamp as soon as possible. They have a distinct odor that will help you decide to move them soon. Just keep them in something where you can have a lamp over them, where they can't escape. You do have to make sure they don't pile up and smother each other.

By that time of the year and those temps, they will be fine when they are fully feathered....
