Depends on where i'm hunting... When i hunted in the mountains or temporate rain forest, i stalked my game 99% of the time... These days, where i now do most of my hunting, i still hunt from a blind that i build...

Hi Hampster,
Perhaps it's a Regional Terminology or maybe it's a generation gap thing or other. I don't know.
I've always understood that 'still hunting' was moving slowly. Looking and Listening. Just one or two steps at a time and then total scilence. 'Stalking' begins once the prey is spotted and moving closer is needed.
Sitting in a tree or ground-blind, I refer to as 'stand hunting'.
I prefer a stand but, if in the season, I'm in an area I've not scouted, I'll walk (still-hunt) to combine scouting with a chance of spotting and stalking.

interesting Ozark.. I've always know still hunting as staying in one stop and letting the game come to you... but I'll ake my husband about that.. he seems to be the expert in our family..

I know we are blessed with wonderful places to hunt.. I cannot imagine sitting in the woods all day and never seeing a deer.. I know I hear people say that.. I would lose interest in hunting really fast if that were the case.. like I said.. we are blessed..

I'm more of a stand hunter for two reasons. One, I see more game and two , I can take pictures. I have had quail fly into my stand. Owls and hawks have perched on a limb outside my stand less then a foot from my face. I have watched coyotes play catch with field mice. I usually miss that when on foot.

In gun hunting Oklahoma and ETexas I'll usually start out at or about 0730 in a tree stand and if nothing is moving in my favor by 1030 I'll stalk if there is enough moisture in the pinestraw/leaves ground cover to allow me to move quitely. The stalk is far more enjoyable as I can really get into the mental mode of the hunt and lose lots of time while covering not much territory.

When it comes to archery I will use gound blinds but very seldom stalk as getting within 35 yds with a bow can be difficult.

flatwater, we have a tree stand on our property that we DO NOT hunt.. but I like sitting there and just watching all the action.. like you... how great to see all those special moments....

once my husband and I were on our property.. my husband was in the tree stand.. and I was sitting in a seat on the ground.... this is on a bit of a hill.... I hear something behind me.. but I do not move... we have allot of bears.. and I knew my husband could see me.. and if there was a bear he would have done something... and I was pretty sure he was awake.. lol... it was a beautiful 8 point buck... he walked right up to me with his head out.. he almost touched the back of my head.. he must have liked my white diamonds fragrance.. my husband said he thought he was going to pull my hat off... then he backs up a bit.. and walks around me... comes right in front of me... head sticking out... sniffing me... with those horns less then 3 feet away from me.. I got just a little uncomfortable.. so I smiled at him... he stood there .. oh maybe 3 more minutes.. not moving... and of course I didn't more either.. then he just walked away without any fear or concern...

I hear so much about covering your scent.. I never do.. and sometimes I see more game in a day that most see in a lifetime... one morning on one of the farms we hunt.. I counted 112 deer from daylight to noon.. some may have been duplicates.. revisiting the same area where we were.. no way of knowing..

I carry the same defination to still hunting as Ozark, I prefer to hunt in a stand, but sometimes i just get the itch to move around a bit and see what I'm missing, so I'll start still hunting.

Do whichever one i am in mood for for the day. Often hunting is just an excuse to get in woods and hike around. I will explore and stalk those days. If it has been a rough week i might us a stand and relax some and take qan easy day. Often I will stand hunt in morning then hike and stalk/move slowly through woods in afternoon.
