I am now the proud owner of four pedigreed Satin rabbits. Three does and one buck. I will start them in the breeding process next week, once they get settled into their new home. I actually got one doe for free, and I think I know why. She's so fat that I don't know if she will breed, but if she does, she should have some very interesting colored offspring. None of them will be for show, but for the freezer.

The lady who sold them to me turned out to know my sister. She ( my sister) was a state FFA officer years ago and the woman I bought my rabbits from was an officer the following year. Small world!

Congrats! Please keep us posted how the breeding goes and the first harvest for the freezer!

I think the doe can be brought back down to breeding weight if she has difficulty in her current state. There are a few other posts on this board about that.

Keeping them in a shed or a barn?

Pat

I bred Satins in 2 varieties, red & copper for about 6-7 years back in the late 70s. The reds were the better for me. They are a nice meat type rabbit. tried them again a few years ago but then made the switch to Mini Rex, thinking about some mini Satins now that they have been accepted to standards. I do breed for show, eat the culls or sell for pet feed.

Congrats on your new rabbits...... You should get them all into a proper weight range. Even if they can conceive while overweight, the excess weight can cause birthing problems.

Good luck. You'll have fun.
