Out with my hunting buddy opening day; we both took shots at big does, but only found one blood trail and one deer. We weren't sure who's it was.

But the verdict is in...the deer was downed by buckshot, which I was using. (He had rifled slugs)

So yay! I've had venison in the freezer before, but this was the first one I've shot, gutted, and dragged out of the woods. Though the doe was HUGE, and I had to get my brother to help drag it in. She has to weigh close to 150 pounds dressed out...I have a short bed truck, and with her hiney at the front of the box she laid out clear 'cross the tailgate!

I could get into this hunting stuff...... ;D

Thanks, folks.

And as my truck is still all smashed on one side, victim of a 'hit and run deer', I will really be enjoying a new specialty - venison revenge stew!

Just bought another doe permit and hope to repeat the experience next weekend, there's a bit of room in the freezer yet. ;D

Well, y'all are not going to believe this....after all that excitement getting my first deer, I no longer have any venison.

The store where I took it for processing burned down. Completely. To the ground. With my venison in it. :'(

On the upside, no one was hurt, and the fire department did a wonderful job saving the adjoining buildings - which is good, since there's only about six buildings in the whole town.

So....back to the woods. My area has a late firearms season, so if the deer haven't all yarded up already, maybe I can get another one.

And maybe I'll have to learn to butcher it in my own back yard!

Man, that sucks.
I too got my first deer this season. Butchered it myself.

If I am not mistaken, there a few places in our wonderful country that like "blackened" foods. You might have missed a real taiste treat! All kidding aside, that is a shame. I would encourage you to learn how to process the deer yourself. I did and now I have a small butchering buisness. Saves a ton of money and is very enjoyable to say you did it yourself.
