Today was opening day of archery season but we didn't want to get up early so we decided to go squirrel hunting instead.
Got out the door about 9 a.m. We took the 4 wheeler into the woods and then got off and walked. we decided to hunt about 100 yards apart but he went out over a rise so we wouldn't shoot at each other. I sat down against a tree partway up a hill and he went ahead on and as soon as he was out of sight the squirrels thought the danger was past and so i saw a couple. I was using my air rifle so my hubby could use the good .22 this time. Well that first squirrel silhouetted against a tree and i shot at its head and missed. It wasn't that far away, either. Then after a bit i saw a squirrel jumping in the trees way out of the air rifle's range. So i moved up the hill in that direction and when i crested the hill i lost sight of that one but there was one on the ground not far away. I took a shot at it and missed again. I'm a lot better shot than that, but squirrels do move and there was nuthing to rest the gun against. I hunted around a little longer and i heard my husband shoot his rifle a couple times. Didn't see anymore squirrels myself, and it was time to meet up back at the 4 wheeler. He had got a good size gray and the other shot had been at a blackbird which he also hit, and he said that little .22 is dead on.
We decided to hunt an hour longer till 12 oclock and we both went separate ways. I have a good spot i like and so i no sooner got backed against a tree and there's branches moving from a squirrel in a big tree dead ahead. I was on a high bank and the squirrel's tree was down below but it was so tall it was still up above where i was. I kept seeing glimpses of it but it wouldn't hold still. Remember, i only had an air rifle. It finally presented for a shot but then it started moving and was almost out of range. Due to my previous bad luck with head shots i took a desperation shot at body mass which connected. the squirrel jumped to another tree and when it stopped i shot at body mass again. It started running down the tree then then dropped quickly. I kept watching to see where it went but there were trees that could block the view so i got up and slid all the way to the bottom of the hill which was all dry with loose dirt. When i went to the last place the squirrel had been, it was laying there gasping it's final breath. A nice big red one it was.
That was it and it was a fun hunt, but next time i'll take the .410.
