Am I the only one that fishes in the winter?
It's my favorite time of the year.
Here in TN, the sauger are starting to move up, the stripe and hybrids are schooling and the big smallmouth are turning on. Anybody else get out in the cold?

Much differnt than here...Ice fishing is just coming up.
The lakes are good and solid now, for rainbows and lake trout.
The Gulf Of Alaska is getting unfriendly as far as storms go. The salmon other than the winter king run are over, the halibut have headed ?????
So its time to drill a hole, make a hot buttered rum and hook up some hungry trout up at Trail Lake.......

I bought a bunch of new ice fishing equipment last year and haven't seen safe ice since. In my part of Ohio we usually get enough ice to mess up open water fishing, but not enough to walk on.

I live in South Texas by the Gulf, so I don't know anything about ice fishing. I haven't been fishing in about 2-3 years, but just bought myself a rod and reel and I'm trying to get started again. You guys have any tips on when the best time to fish is?

Safety-man: The best time to fish is whenever you have time to fish. ;D Go get 'em and have fun!

Used to ice fish on Lake Erie as a kid. Funny how you don't even notice the cold or the 30mph wind when you're pulling a couple dozen perch out of a hole.

Sure long for winter. Here in TN it's too dang hot to fish in the daytime, not much is biting at night, 'cept the skeeters, and it's gonna be a long summer. Due to the drought they aren't generating much at the dams and things are just real slow with little current in the lakes.
Like tn_junk, I much prefere winter time fishing.

You are all welcome to come up to Minnesota anytime between November and March... you want ice fishing, this is the place to be!
We drag mobile homes out on the ice, fire up the propane heater, drill four or six holes, set four... or six cases of beer outside the door, then go to crazy!
Bring kids with you to drill the holes, 19 inches of ice can sap your strength and ruin your drinking arm.
But just remember that once the holes are drilled to send the kids home (let them catch one or two but don't go overboard)!
Returning to work on monday, no one is allowed to ask, "So what did you catch?" because everyone knows why you really went!
BTW: A radio and a TV is perfectly acceptable but there are limits, DVD players have been banned as "sissified" by everyone concerned.
The "old-timers" still use old tents and plywood boxes but there is no reason to get crazy!
