We are looking for a coonhound for our grandson in NW, MO. He has a trapline; but has decided he would like to coon hunt. His great grandfather ran dogs and hunted coons most of his life. I guess it is in the blood even if it skips a couple of generations. :)

Sounds like a bunch of fun. I coon hunted regular as an early teen. You can spend as much on a dog as your pocket book will allow. You may be able to find a local hunter that can guide you as to where to find a pup that will fit your needs. Ask a bunch of questions and know as much as you can about the breed you are interested in. If he is ready to go hunting now a grown dog may be what you want.

Consider a mountain cur. They will hunt anything and are great tree dogs.

I got one, and he even trees people given the chance. "Talks" and back-sasses a lot too. ::) Black Mouthed Curs are hard to beat. Most of them act exactly like Old Yeller did in the Disney film.

Black mouth and Mountain Curs are good. If you go with mountain I'd recomend Kemmer Curs.

The best coon hound I've seen is English Red Ticks. They have the stay power on a long winded coon. Recomending woodstock breed.

All of these breeds can be seen on the UKC websight. I have blackmouth and english and I like both. Blackmouth don't have a real good nose. To tree Coons the way you would want to, the dog needs a good nose.

You don't want a hybred Kemmer but a full Kemmer Mountain Cur. The hybreds are mixed with somekind of terrier.

This is a good direction to point your grandchild to. I have a five year old son and he has a fit if he can't go.
