Several years ago I used to read a lot about CWD among the deer and elk herds in the U.S.. Supposedly it reached as far south as Oklahoma. However, I haven't read much about it on the web or in magazines lately. Has it "gone away," or is just not "the flavor of the day" for discussion any more?

Follow the link - Top right column... Kinda point blank with a bit of hunter spin, but the hunters here pay a lot of the bills.

Challenge: There is a recipe or two on the site also if you can find them... :D

It's alive and well in several states.
I saw it in wyoming spread very fast. I hated to see it. I have seen it in deer and reported to WGF. They never followed up on it. The carcas stayed all winter. Laying out on the prarie. It is spreading into several states but they don't like to make too big a deal of it. Bad for business you see.

shadowwalker,
I live in the Hill Country of Texas and since it's been pretty well confirmed that CWD is in Oklahoma, I'm afraid it won't be too long before it spreads to Texas--if it hasn't already. And, like you, I'm afraid it will be kept quiet because it would be bad for the hunting business, which brings in several billion dollars a year here.

From the link -
Today, 34 years since the disease was discovered, pathologists have learned more about the disease, but still have much to learn before they fully understand it. However slowly, CWD has continued to creep across the United States and Canada, currently impacting either captive or free-ranging deer in nine states and a pair of Canadian provinces. This includes a closely monitored captive elk herd in central Oklahoma.
