how to light old coleman heater

Hello,

I am puting this in this forum because I know hunters and fishermen alike use these from time to time. ;D I have a very old coleman heater that uses coleman fuel. I however cannot figure out how to light it. It does not have a pump up like my lantern and I dont see where to light it. ???

If it's like the one we used camping it would be kind of dome shaped and the top looked like a screen over a gray material.

If this is it make sure you take it outside to light. The method was to fill the tank and then pour Coleman fuel over the top in a cross shaped pattern. You then lit it and waited until the catalitic heater began to work before taking it into the tent.

You are on your own with this as I assume no responsibility if it doesn't work or causes problems. Why not go to Coleman's website and see if you can get some help.

I believe I have the same type of heater, and surely the same kind Star1pup is talking about. Instead of pouring fuel on the top, you can hold the heater upside down for about a minute. Enough fuel will seep out to dampen the gray material. You can see it as a damp circle. Definitely light it outside, as it could produce a flame a foot or so high. Eventually the flame will burn out and the fabric will begin to glow. Then it is safe to replace the screen and take the heater inside.

There should be a spring loaded metal cover that fits under the screen. Put the cover in place and close the screen. Suffocate the heater.

And remember to have plenty of ventilation when you use this. We don't want you to be the one suffocated.

I have a Coleman like you are talking about. To light you turn it over until you get a small wet spot about as big as a quarter. Do not light this in a tent, cabin or inside a fishing shack. Take it outside to burn off excess fuel. When the flames go away it is safe for inside use. Don't fall asleep inside a shelter with this heater running. These are nice heaters and I would buy a few more.

I used it this weekend inside a drafty 250sf cabin. It did kinda knock the chill out of the cabin. I really needed 2 more though ;D

The new LP gas ones work better and are not as bulky.

I just bought a Coleman propane catalytic for this coming weekend that has a small blower. It works really well
