I am from Michigan, born and raised until I left for the Military at 17. I went back for a few years at different times and while there persued my passion of hunting the big Fox Squirrels that are so abundant in that state. Now, my best friend and I both live here in Oregon, he is a native Michigander also, and a squirrel hunting nut like me. We have been trying desperately to find the Western Gray Squirrels out here to hunt, but all of our efforts have been met with no results. We have been mostly up in the HWY 22 corridor east and west of Salem and the I-5 corridor south to about Corvallis. We have seen them out here, mostly near non hunting areas, Oregon has seasons on them, we know they are out here, but where do you find them? We were hoping that maybe someone on this site may be able to help a couple of old Michigan Squirrel Hunters find some of the delicious little guys. Any advice would be appreciated. There is not much help on the web about them in Oregon that I can find. Thanks all.

I feel for ya, feralgun! Another old (very!) Michigander who thinks the meat of the fox squirrel is from the gods themselves! And all of the variants (black, greys, etc.) Moved to Arizona and they have the Abarth squirrel (sp?)--about the size of the fox, but with a lynx-like tuft on their ears, and not a lot of them.
Now I'm in Alaska and here we only have a fairly large version of the red squirrel--not enough to bother to hunt for the meat, but kind of fun to watch from your kitchen window!
Wishing you to find a good source of this huntiong and culinary delight there in Oregon! Good luck!
