View Full Version : Visitors in the night

We had a car with 3 or 4 black guys in it pull in the drive way 4 times last night. The just set there the first time until I went outside.
The second time when I got to the door with the flashligh in my hand two of them ran from behind the business (Truck tire shop) on the corner. I called 911 and the cops, believe it or not, had 3 cars there in minutes but they were gone.
They did the same thing the last time. Run from behind the shop where it's dark as all get out.
As they were jumping back in the car the last time I pulled a couple rounds off in the ground and they didn't waste any time leaving that time. I stayed up until Steph got up at 5 this morning and never seen them again.
I wish I could move to the country. I wish I could pick up the house and all the land I have that I can use and just move it to where no one was within a mile or two..
This place is getting on my last nerve.
I got the .22 rifle down and told Stephanie if they pulled back in I was going to shoot a head light out but I didn't do it.
Seemed like the 2 back to back shots in the ground worked but it sure tore my nerves up the rest of the night. You never know what they are thinking about or what drugs they are on.
I knew a guy who was the son of a preacher. I liked the dickens out of him. Just as nice a guy as you could find, "UNTIL HE GOT STARTED ON CRACK COCAINE" that is.
His father owned a plumbing business, and he worked for him. They (him and a guy working for them) did a job at an old couples house and seen some money that they had and him and they robbed and killed both of them, to get money to buy some more crack.
I thought they were framed to start with until everything came out. I went to the trial a couple days and I was blind sided.
What is this world coming to. When someone that was as nice as he was would murder someone just to get high??

for those om a really tight budget who don't need more than a yard biga enough for a giant garden, how about this? I know the town, it is a nice little town, about 50 miles from KCMO.

this place @ $134 a month for the mortgage...even with taxes and INS would probably not be more than @250.
It's a nice little town too. *

and oh yes, there are jobs waiting a mere 10 miles away, on GOOD roads. The DOC here is ALWAYS recruiting, it is a GROWTH industry. Great benefits are offered too. Don't like those folks, maybe you'll like them better in a DOC setting.
C'mon out, get a nice piece of property, a decent life and peace and quiet.
AND, cheap as I am, I would BUY IT MYSELF... for the future if the economy wasn't so bad. What a GREAT retirement place when I'm too old for the farm.

Thanks for the pointer Fred but at least I have a 20+ acre field and 38=/- acres of woods at my disposal where I am at. But that sounds like a good deal for some one if they are looking for something.

And you STILL have night visitors??? BETTER be ready to shoot 'cause they're not just casual "drop ins".
I'd be real leery abiut coming home after dark, hope you have a couple of bowsers.
Here's a chilling thought, maybe they are friends of the preacher's son and he told them you had something of value.

That's pretty cheap but I don't know much about Mo. as far as the state. I sure would be interested in a deal like that though.

I would try a video camera with infrared night vision. I have one
and it works like a charm. If the police don't want to use the tape,
try the other option. 12Ga OO buckshot. Not pretty, but it works.

That's pretty cheap but I don't know much about Mo. as far as the state. I sure would be interested in a deal like that though.

MO is a GREAT state for those who like plenty of leeway and breathing room. It has two big cities one on either side. The roads are pretty good, the schools (inrural areas are safe and good to excellent). Taxes are LOW, however we do have an income tax and property tax on vehicles. The secret here is to have older vehicles that are in good shape (saves money other ways too).
State sales tax is 4%, but depending on where you buy it can go up to 8% with city/county taxes. We have many areas in the state that are VERY economical areas to live in. Some people like it further south in the Ozarks, some further east towards IL. This area of the state suits me, we have nice rolling hills and lots of woods/cropland. There is a LOT of game up here, deer, turkey, pheasant and quail. For fur hunters, coons and coyotes abound (also skunks ans muskrats).
People here WANT you to go to church, that's about their biggest flaw.
They can be reserved , but that's pretty much just in this town, (NOT KIDDER) but I knew what I was in for the real estate lady told me they were "clannish" before I bought.
They WILL help you if you have an emergency, they LOVE to help and you CAN rely on them to never leave you stranded anywhere.
No bragging EVER goes on here and "showing off" is a sin.
We have some here that don't fit the mold, but they are few and far between.
I guess MO is just a bunch of good 'ol boys that like hunting, fishing and working on cars...no joke. My son moved back and it took about two years for him to completely shed his Eastern ways. Now he's fishing working on cars, and is up to three dogs. However he has not taken up hunting...no one wants the venison.
Farming is excellent up here, just about everything you stick in the ground grows, most years.
There are farmers you can buy meat animals from, butchers who will slaughter and package them (around $0.40 a pound), you can get pastured poultry and eggs from free range chickens. There are dairy farmers that sell raw milk (for "animal" feed).
Lots of good things about the state, and hard as it is to believe, I see signs of growth. EVEN NOW.
Kidder by the way is right on the projected NAFTA route, and just a hop skip and a jump from I35.

fnfredux, dang you made me hungry. The only thing wrong with that place is it is only 120 x 150 lot. Pictures makes it look like it is 3 or 4 acres but after reading it all I saw the lot size.
I showed it to my wife last night and told her if it were on 4 or 5 acres and I could raise chickens, goats, and pigs I would seriously think about it.
I didn't realize my 18 year old daughter was looking and listening from behind me. They both said in harmony, "For real", :) ....

And as long as I am here, which will probably be the rest of my life, I don't walk out the door with out the .380 in my back pocket. If they want my billfold, they get the gun.
I know what they were up there for. They were going to break into Mac's Tire service. I am as sure of that as I am that as I am that I am setting here now.
If they think I won't, "in thier own language, pop a cap in thier @$$" they best think again.
I came a nats @$$ taking the .22 and punching there head lights out, and if they pull back in here again I will. I ain't playing with them.
I sure wish I could pick this place up and lay it right beside that trailer there. Except for the NAFTA route coming so close.
And if things are as good as you say they are now, I wouldn't be happy about showing signs of growing. You have it made now and don't know it. Grouth spoils a land.

small oler home, cheaper with over 6A in another nice town. These places are bargains, the land alone in these areas *was going for well over 5K an acre for small acreage.
Wish I wasn't so close to "retirement" whatever that is because I'd be a buyer now.
Now, the I-35 thing...no way will they STOP it, but this place is far enough away that yopu won't get any noiose, fumes etc. What you WILL get is some great property appreciation.
I guess the house might need work, but it's small enough to be done thriftily, it's been there 108 years so I guess it's pretty well situated.
I don't know your financial situation, but a $116 mortgage payment on a liveable house with 6+A sounds okay to me.
Take a look @
realtor.com
to find out about the area and search for properties. I only look for great bargains, you might have different ideas.
see, now you've got me HUNTING!

This looks just like a house I looked at about ten years ago. If you like the real BOONIES, this is for YOU. It was about 60% higher in price then too. I'll bet this guy's selling to move closer in.
and still another with 9A, a bit more, like $163 for the mortgage but bigger.
http://tinyurl.com/62zr2o

and this place just over the border in IA
http://tinyurl.com/54qvuf
just 2 A tho

heard we had a couple, saw a "big cat" twice, a red wolf (Carolina wolf) once, and two wolves about 30 yards from my goat pen, big as life in the early AM, right after sunrise, just walking on by. Of course we have some conservation land, and a state park nearby, lots of woods. Bears and Rattlers are about the only things I'm afraid of. Now we have both.

A farmer about a mile or so from here had a 250lb hog dragged about 300' from his barn, he figures it was a big cat. I'm not the only one who has seen them a lot of folks here have when you talk about it first. That Carolina Red Wolf I saw, nobody believed me, nobody believed me about the two in my pasture, they didn't SAY anything but...

I was surprised to see a badger when I came home late one night, people didn't believe that eithe, it was living (at least that's where it headed when the car approached) in a "tube" in a culvert. I HAD to check with the consevation dept and yes, we do have them. It was living in close proximity to humans in a populated area, THAT surprised me. Coyotes are wicked up here, lots of grain fields, lots of mice, sqirrels, rabbits and ground nesting birds. Lots of coyote food. Hoping now that the price of pelts is up (fur is popular again) we'll be seeing and hearing less from them. Foxes, they don't bother me, I don't have any chickens yet, ditto for raccoons.
Hope I NEVER see a bear. They seem like irrational critters.

Thanks everyone for the links of all those neat houses. I talked with a co worker that lived in Mo as well. He loved it. Told me some of the things I think I really needed to hear. The information here alone has the wife and me pretty fired up. Next June I will be able to bank close to a thousand a month. I will be visiting Mo. I was really looking at Motana but I think I would freeze their. Mo. has almost the same weather as we do, just a tad colder in the winter.

Let us know where you're coming from and where you're going, all of us from MO will be glad to tell you about the areas you'll be traveling through. We'll be happy to share favorite restaurants, camping spots, state and National Parks and areas for recreation like canoeing, fishing, hiking, rock climbing and mountain biking. We have it all in this state.

Crafty2002 - this thread strayed a bit from your immediate problem of prowlers. Does the business owner know or care that he's about to be hit? He needs to be taking care of his own business - lights, camera, action.

If it's your own driveway they're pulling in to, maybe there's something you can do to block it at night? Sounds like a scarry place to live, for sure! I'm concerned that your idea of shooting a headlight could go terribly wrong - and you'd be the one ending up in the pen instead of the creeps that are bothering you.

And spike strips

I would suggest motion activated spotlamps.

And spike strips

Missouri spike strips:

1 8' 1"X4" board
1 lb 16d nails
1 hammer, reuseable

saw board in half
using hammer pound appoximately 1/2 lb nails into each board
apply to driveway after dark
wait
If you hear a car in the drive hurry to put the outside light on to scare them off, you don't want them stuck in your drive way.
DON'T use this recipe if you don't live in a rural area, innocent people could be endangered.

Now the MAIN thing is REMEMBER to remove them first thing in the AM

I used this method when building materials kept disappearing from our building site. only one application did the trick.

Crafty do you have anything like what is referred to as the "Castle Doctrine Law" here in TX? It gives us the right to shoot to kill in order to protect or home, family, and property and under certain circumstances you can also protect your neighbors property the same way. We no longer have to retreat before shooting to kill if you think you are in danger for your life.

That sounds like my house east of Nashville,TN. I had bought (unknown to me) a ex dealers house. We had people showing up for almost two years wanting either drugs or moonshine. I couldn't get to overboard with my receptions of them as I had real customers showing up too.
I only answered my door or a car in the driveway after dark with a flashlight and big old nickle plated 44 magnum. I let the gun hang at my side in my hand and kept turning it so the house light would glisten off the gun.
If you can afford it put up a game trailcam of some kind. Where you have your worst activity.I put mine up out of reach and got quite a few people "looking" after dark. That made the biggest dent in my night visitors.
The law, BLAH!, I was told they couldn't/wouldn't do anything until a crime was commited. Tresspass wasn't a crime in that part of Tennessee I guess.
I started putting the pictures of people up at the local information board at our convience station. Wife copied them off the cams onto picture paper. No wording or anything just the surprised faces and bodies caught on the cam. The lady said some of her customers really wanted to know where and how their pictures got there.

These were my thoughts exactly. I'd tell the business owner about the activity and then let him/her take care of it as he/she sees fit.
