I have a Katadyn Microfilter (www.beprepared.com) in my emergency kit; but the method I'd use first and foremost I outlined in my post entitled - Distilled water without a distiller - just scroll down in the self-reliance forum to find it. *This method will even convert salt water to drinking water. * *
Water filters only go so far for purification - and it depends on what your source for water IS to begin with as to their effectiveness. *And don't forget to have a few extra filters because they only do a certain amount of water and then they are no longer effective for filtration. *When it comes to purification, distillation is the best method for drinking water - much better than boiling, filters, or chemical treatment. *Many "filters" do not actually purify the water, but simply filter it to "taste better", so buyer beware.
I distill all our drinking and storage water - I wouldn't trust any other method.

We bought a big one also, it is a knock off of the Berky also. We bought extra filters also. We are using a Britta at the house now.
Came across a very interesting home made filter that might be worth trying to make now so in Badtimes it would be a great barter item.

Katadyn Hiker. Easiest to use and plenty of refill cartridges available. Can filter as much as 200 gallons on a single cartridge. http://www.redflarekits.com/pc/2050/wat/Hiker+Water+Filter+by+Katadyn
I also carry Micropur water purification tablets: no taste and better efficiency compared to your regular iodine pills.

eeyore, good link. Simple is always good and that filter looks like it would be workable in a pinch.
Redflare, the site is looking good. Didn't see the refill cartridges for the filters.
How much are the refills? I never buy just one of anything. Always want extra maintenance parts when buy.

I will add the replacement cartridges and post the link here in a day or two. They will run about $37 each. You can filter as much as 200 gallons through them and the filters are pretty simple to use.
Read about my recent experience with the very same filter while hiking to Mt. Whitney. :D

I have the berkey light, and it is really cool. I live in Spokane, WA and our water comes from an aquafer. Our current house is old with cast iron pipes which make the water taste metallic. The berkey completely removes all of the bad taste. The filter has lasted much longer than the manufacturer stated, perhaps this is due to the relative purity of our water to begin with.
Hope this helps you.

Yea, I've got a berky. To me, it was far more important to be able to filter a lot of water rather than try to store that same amount of water. There are streams all over the place where I live. I just needed a way to get rid of all the creepy crawlies before drinking it.

I just spent 8 days with a sister who used the Big Berkey. During the whole visit, I never felt like my thirst had been quenched. Does anyone know if that was because "too much" had been filtered out of the water?

The Katadyn is great.
If all else fails-- tablets or boiling. :)
