I just stopped to think about what I've done this year and what I haven't done so next year is going to be play time. Besides doing the husband things I've spent all the summer either working on our cabin or helping a friend rebuild his cabin before the snows start to fall. What I haven't done is anything relaxing , no fishing , no hiking , no canoeing , and I feel like I'm warn out. The question to you all is , have any of you found yourselves working so much that you forgot to play a little?

Last year was like that for me. From the beginning of March until November, I was working at my job six days a week and occassionally finding time to work on the honey-do list on Sundays.
By fall, I managed to get in a little fishing before everything froze up, but not like I usually do. December became a do-nothing month (that's about the time I joined this site, if memory serves me), but then January was time to pack for the move down here. I haven't been "going to work" much since, but I've been working on keeping up the property and earning money here and there.
FW, just think of it this way, you got all or most of the stuff that needed to be done and you all are that much closer to having a stree free winter.

Know what ya mean,I have had no vacation and dont see one in the near future. Havent attended or hosted any family functions or cookouts this summer. Maybe I can do a big Thanksgiving. Havent been fishing, not even bought a license this year. And darn it summer is gone. Now I have new baby chicks to care for till November 1 and 2nd, then they get butchered. Maybe I will get to deer hunt a little.
We still need to cut more firewood, can pears, dig sweet potatoes, can mustard and turnip greens. Got a lot more honey-do projects for hubby to help me do. We might get done before it snows.
But we have had a very productive summer and live the good life.
When winter gets here we can sit in and hopefully relax a bit.

I have been going flat-out, actually, for about 2 years now.
I lost an entire tree of the best pears I have ever grown because I did not check the pears often enough. Too busy (no longer racing around, but busy) and too worn out.
I haave given this some real thought. If I continue going at top speed I will get more done quickly, but, since things are more relaxed now I do not HAVE to push myself as hard as I can.
So, I am going at normal speed, now. It means that DD has needed new glasses for a while, and the appointment has not yet been made. It means that I have not yet insulated the potting shed.
But, last night I took the time to make fried chicken and potatos with an apple dessert, while the kids did homework, instead of doing more pressing things. I got complements from DH. The kids and I are going to the library almost every week. And, I INTEND to go fishing again before it gets cold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will still be busy for a while: I just do not intend to do my best for a while. I am surrounded by roses: I have decided to stop and smell a few of 'em!

It is non-stop for us also. With hubby on the road, that leaves me with a lot to do at home and when he finally gets home, he helps me with things I can't do by myself. It's a wicked rat race that I hope will eventually slow down.
When I see what's going on in the world, maybe we won't be able to slow down that much, we'll just have to keep going in order to survive.
We sure would enjoy some leisure time, though.

The BS stream seems to be on full flow this year lol.
I try to take days here and there just to relax and get myself together but it's hard. I just have to leave it all up to God with all the stuff that's going on.

Life is TOOOO SHORT to not SLOW DOWN, enjoy yourselves.
If you work ALL the time, there is really no life.
My husband often worked seven days a week, 12 hour days. No he is older, has had two heart attacks, and realized IT WAS NOT WORTH IT!
Simplify your lives before it is too late!!!!
I know there are lots of family responsibilities BUT if you are working all the time, you are missing out on what TRUE FAMILY LIFE is all about....
I know I sound like an aging hippie, which I guess I am, but like I said, life is too short to work all the time...
I see all sorts of fancy houses that look like they are NEVER LIVED in because the people are working all the time to be able to live there....even small houses take a lot of work to keep payments up nowdays....
But think of ways you can simplify your lives!!! I love you all!

You are right Suzy. I have seen much of what you say right here in the city. New houses but no one home to enjoy them. I guess it's pretty easy to get wrapped up in the rat race and before you know it, you haven't had a single moment to yourself or family. Gotta slow down and smell the roses.

Oh, it wasn't the rat race.
It was the financial trouble that my MIL got into when her identity was stolen, and she needed repairs on her house. She is elderly, and she needed our help.
Now that that is taken care of, we are so FAR behind at our place!

This is a good topic, I was hoping to get more activity in this forum. My wife and I did a lot of traveling when we first met. I love seeing new places. We did a lot of camping, and most trips involved water so we could go kayaking. I had plans for retirement that involved traveling the inland waterways and maybe writing about it. Well, plans are good and dreams are nice, but when we settled in here they fell by the wayside. Not because it's impossible to do that, just that my priorities and inclinations changed. I enjoy puttering around the homestead so much that I have little desire to leave. The animals make it difficult to leave, but we have neighbors we trade off with for trips. We go to weddings and other family get-togethers. The homestead makes a convenient excuse to bug out early. Usually I get antsy after a few days and I want to return home.
By the way, I have a Dovekie trailer sailer with electric MinnKota 48v trolling motor for sale. Large enough to sleep two adults and a few dogs comfortably. We hauled it to Tennessee from Virginia with a 4-cylinder Honda - very light boat. Will float in 2 inches of water, sail in 6. Comes with oars and is a good gunkholer. I'll throw in gymbal stove, pfd's and other misc gear. IM me if interested.
Regards,
Pat

OK I've had enough , Just finnished my friends roof so it's ok for the winter, now it's time to rest and do a little hunting at my cabin. Next year will be more play time and less rushed type work.
