I don't buy expensive watches. The most I've spent on one in the last 20 years was $25. I like a digital watch that can show the time (24 hr clock) the date and the day of the week without pushing any buttons. They can usually be found for $17-$25 from Timex or Casio.

The problems lately has been losing the watch. The last two were lost when they got torn off my wrist while working. One time was moving straw from the truck to the chicken house, where we stor it) and another time what while clearing brush. I do need to keep an eye on the time so my wife doesn't have to come out hunting for me for meals and the occasional rare appointment.

What do you folks do for watches? Is there a watch out there that can handle being roughed up? I'm kind of toying with the idea of a pocket watch, but I need something else in my pocket like a hole in the head. Swiss Army makes one, but it's kind of pricey - would have to last at least 10 years to justify the expense.

I don't use a cell phone - when I retired I swore I would never touch another one if I could avoid it. Things kind of worked out - we don't have a signal here. I can tell when I'm getting near a big town by the cell phones - everybody has a hand clutched to their face, yakking on a phone.

Pat

I made the mistake a couple years ago of thinking that a wind up watch would be good since the batteries won't run down.
I got one for Christmas from Lehman's it lasted 13 months before it died.
I have a digital Armitron that is going on two years now.
If you buy a winder spend extra for a good one.

Think pocket watch. And watch for holes in your pocket.

Or take a watch off of the wristband and keep it in a belt sheath.

My wife got me an expensive self-winding kenetic watch for my brithday. Worst, most inaccurate watch I've ever had. Though I wore it consistantly every day, it kept on stopping. I had to adjust the time so many times that the stem broke off. I went back to a cheap 20$ K-Mart watch that works perfectly.

Christmas before last one of the sons gave me a DNKY because I can't wear anything but stainless steel - I never take it off. Can't wear anything except maybe 14K gold or break out horibly - never was able to afford 14K. Even the cheapo's with a cloth band or plastic band have some parts that touch your skin that are metal and I will form instant blisters. Considering what I have put this watch through it must be a good one.

Just saw a little travel alarm clock in Rite Aid that comes in a little wallet thing. $6.95. Might do ya - stick it in your pocket.

I picked up this brass sun dial pocket watch/compass at Old Bent's Fort in SE Colorado a couple years ago so if you're looking for something a little different ya might want to consider it. It does have a couple drawbacks like dark and clouds but hey, it never runs down. It is a repo of those issued to Roger's Rangers in the 1760's and about the size of a silver dollar. It's kinda unique and an excellent "ice breaker" when some sweet young thing ask you the time. Not exactly "time in a bottle" but it does work well as long as the sun is shinning.

The last time a sweet thing asked me if I had the time, I got slapped when I answered.

Oh, and that is a nice watch, Rick!
