View Full Version : Anybody watch "Surviving Katrina"

I watched it last night on the Discovery channel. First thing that caught my attention was how everyone responded "We didn't know", "We didn't think". Second thing that grabbed me was how all of the officials drug their feet in stepping up to the plate and setting a plan in action.
Whether any of it is true or not, it seems like former FEMA chief Micheal Brown got a bum rap.
I would like to have seen a segment on people who were able to weather the storm due to the preps they made. Granted, there probably weren't many, but I bet there were some.
Now to stay on track with the board, are there any specific preps that can be made if one lives in a "bowl" or flood plain? I imagine a boat would be a necessity as well as a house built on stilts above the flood stage. Any other thoughts?

My thoughts are[[ get the hell out of dodge]].

Many houses here along the coast are on stilts.

Most have some kind of boat---not fancy--just get out size.

I will try to remain calm as I post this-- ;D

Ray Nagin and Blanco had to have a scape goat--so FEMA was their target---

It was the water surge on the levies that caused them to break---a Corp of Eng. mess--even now they dont think they will hold.

www.chron.com the Houston Chronicle had a huge segement of its paper covering this--in this Sundays addition.

When you have 2 wks warning a disaster is coming and you do nothing---well.

Blame whom you will---ultimatley its up to the indiviual to get out--prepare in place---

You see--its wasnt this cities [[NO ]] first hurricane--and it wont be its last.

I am sick of hearing about katrina---

I thought I read a couple of articles where there were a few who did stay and they were prepared.
The one article that sticks out was somewhat negative towards the people who prepared. It was the one where a couple of neighbors came together, and fought off a group of looters with rifles. Seems the looters were coming down the street, and the nieghbors opened up on them. And the media tried to show these people as crazy.

I survived due to my preps and I fed 20+ people for 10 days. I'm glad I have really got into prepping ;)

I'd like to add one thing.

There were elderly--who didnt drive or even own cars--many alone in this world that were left to die.

There were many very ill left in nursing homes and hospitals---left to die.

There were gased up buses--that could have gotten these people out---the ones I mentioned above.

And if anyone can tell why the patients in nursing homes were left alone to drown---in their beds---i;d appreciate it.

Ray Nagin and Gov.Blanco are as guilty of murder as is Hitler or Osama bin Laudin.

Thats how and whom I classify them with---

killers---they coild have saved them---the ones to feeble to take care of them selves.

But you know who that took care of?? the criminals in jail---yep let them puppies out--to spread out across the country to murder and rape---

If you get a chance---google what Nagin says about 9/11---that'll chill your blood or make ot boil--sorry i dont have a link to that blather of his concerning the response to the vics of 9/11 and Katrina.

See i told you not to get me wound up.

Well come Jan if a man is lucky he has himself a fine lady to snuggle up to to keep warm. The best part is she wont be pushing you away cause its to hot ;D ;D. And for the snow what could be better than to be snowed in with that someone special. ;) ;) ;) ;) So when the snow flys I will be feeling sorry for you all down south where its hot and dont want someone hanging on you. :P :P :P :P

Yes Annie, I'm pretty close on my damage repairs. House is repaired, privacy fence is repaired. I still have to get my shed back on the blocks but need time and jacks, and motivation ;). It's still usable. I'm better than alot of folks. My buddy had flood insurance and is just about to get back in his place. He got about 5 feet but it did not knock his house of the slab.

I'm glad Ernesto was a non event. We sure did not need that even if it was over in Florida.

Nightshift,

I think Ernesto saw the look in our eyes and hign-tailed outta of here----whewwwwww

I am with you---the 2 back to back ''canes last summer--the monsters they were were enough--already.

yeah--i found doing the damamge repair--very depressing---we worked awhile---and let it sit--sometimes when you deal with stressful situations---you have to take a step back.

We had 19--25 depending on where the men in family had to go---We women kept the generators running and babies cool---it got to 110' heat index for about 10 long unmerciful days--no eletric --so we had to be very concerned about babies---5 under the age of 2--

Grandson are volunteer fire dept. so they helped patrol the town and handed out water and ice---care for the heat vics---

All in all we---like yourself---being prepared--made a horrible situation much easier to bare---

Being prepared saved our lives.

Dont be a stranger to us----Good luck neighbor.

" And if anyone can tell why the patients in nursing homes were left alone to drown---in their beds---i;d appreciate it. "

Jesse jackson recently said, while being interviewed by Sean Hannity, that the reason those people were left rather than being hauled elsewhere in buses is because "there was no where to take them to" and that there was "no one to receive them" ...
(I heard him say this on the radio)

...so they just left them to drown.

OLD,

Of all the images that will haunt me will be those water marks on the wall.

I beleive Carolann posted the link---cant remember.

There was someone to receive the crimanals from the jails!!!!!!!!!!!! The able-bodied--the whiners.

That is no excuse---the can never be an excuse for such barbaric behavior from a civilizated country.

This has disturbed me greatly--but noone will ever be held accountable.

THAT IS A BLATANT LIE, I DON'T CARE IF HE IS A "MINISTER" OR NOT.

I know personally, because my church family (myself included) took in over 60 people and could have handled MORE... we even ASKED continually if anyone else needed us. Of course, by the time Nagin and Blanco got through REMODELING THEIR DANGED OFFICES, the elderly people were already dead.

Please don't get me started... I watched people come and go... those with mental disabilites.. those with physical infirmities... the unwanted, the unloved, those who had nothing to begin with, lose everything...

I, and members of my church, spent almost 3 months caring for these people... but I didn't once see either of the "bigwigs" come down and thank our Pastor. Red Cross came, but we didn't need them. FEMA... what a laugh.

I gotta stop now before I need to repent.

FEMA was a bad joke in our area. Some are still waiting for help with housing.

txanne63
09-04-2006, 05:43 PM
So,

Sorry to hear that----areas like Miss--Ala--Upper Fla Coast---didnt get help cause it all went NO---the lying screaming Nagin had so many people hopping to his covering his own A$#@ that others suffered.

I am sorry that your area suffered--here in Tx it was the same--they say fema ran out of money---sure they did it all went to Lousiana--NO---Billons----

I am blown away at the class many other places had--they dug themselves out--pulled themselves up by the boot-straps and have tried to maintain--

If I may ask---what area are you in--?
I know MISS got just pounded--terribly.

I hope you folks are doing well---how is it going now?

It's because of Katrina and Rita that I do the self-reliance thing and watch out for my own needs rather than ask for help. Only if I absolutely need help with something, and only then, do I call someone, a family friend generally, for some help.

I make sure that I have the supplies, tools and equipment to carry myself through the rough patches and assure my own survival. Even with just 24 hours notice I did some final shelter building for animals before we were pounded by two feet of snow from a major winter storm in central Missouri. I need to make a few better decisions for future reference, but none of them hindered me much from making it through a week of being snowed in. I had everything to carry me through that week of isolation, though had phone and grid electricity gone out, I would have had a much more "interesting" situation like St. Louis did with something like 400,000 customers without electricity.

My point is, don't ever rely upon goverment to respond to an emergency with logic, altruism and help. It only serves its own self interests. NEVER TRUST THE GOVERNMENT. RELY UPON YOURSELF ALONE.
