Does anybody have any thoughts on the usefulness of a crossbow as a survival tool?

It's a tool of limited usefullness that affords one with "limited" skill as an archer to make meat. I've got one and use it when the shoulder requires it but a much better tool is most any other type bow.

I've tried one out once. IMO it's better than a slingshot.

it will put meat on the table and it will kill a man. if that is what you mean by a survival tool. it does need some practice, not a lot but some.

It's a lot quieter then a gun when harvesting deer.

martinemyers--

Would make a good survival tool, but is illegal for hunting in my state (unless you are handicapped). :)

How far can a deer be killed with one?

The longest harvest I've taken was a buck at 40 yds. I use a commie 4X scope with it which works well and I could probably push it out to 50 yds but I'm just not comfortable with the possibility of wounding game and actually 90% of my shots are at 15-20 yds.

in some states its illegal if you're not handicapped to use one.. all i can tell you.. but hey by the time we really could get our hands on one and stock up on the bolts it would be illegal for a lot more stuff
